Baseball Splits Conference Opener With Virginia Wesleyan

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team opened conference play this afternoon splitting a doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan.

 Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 15, Virginia Wesleyan – 5
  • Records: Bridgewater (13-5, 1-0); Virginia Wesleyan (9-6, 0-1)

How It Happened

  • The Eagles got on the board first with an RBI single from Hunter Clever in the bottom of the second.
  • Virginia Wesleyan tied it up in the next half inning on a single from Jaelen Hines.
  • Bridgewater took the lead back in the third on a double off the wall in right field from Jeffrey Snider, Jarret Biesecker scored on the play to make it 2-1.
  • Brett Tharp and Tristan Gordon scored in the fourth on an error bringing the Eagles lead to 4-1.
  • Kevin Navedo  drove in Jacob Grabeel and Snider on a single to left field to make it 6-1.
  • BC tacked on one more in the fifth to make it 7-1 on an RBI single from Tharp.
  • The Marlins cut the lead to 7-2 in the sixth on an RBI single from Garrett Lyons to inch back into the game.
  • Four more runs in sixth were scored by Bridgewater to make it an 11-2 lead. Tharp walked with the bases loaded to score Navedo, Clever scored on a wild pitch and Biesecker drove in two runs on a hit to left field to conclude the big inning.
  • VWU inched closer in the seventh tacking on three runs to make it an 11-5 ballgame.
  • Bridgewater finished off the Marlins in the eighth with a bases loaded walk by Snider that scored Lucas Bauer, another bases loaded walk that scored Tharp, and a sac fly from Clever that scored Grabeel to make it a ten-run lead that the Marlins couldn't come back from.

Match Notes

  • Reid Long went 5.2 innings giving up one earned run making his record a perfect 5-0 on the season.
  • Tucker Hrasky pitched 1.1 innings.
  • Nick Griffin finished the game for the Eagles on the mound with 2.0 shutout innings.
  • Snider drove in the most runs for the Eagles with four.
  • Navedo went 2-4 with 3 RBIs.
  • Biesecker, Tharp, Clever each had two RBIs.

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 1, Virginia Wesleyan – 12
  • Records: Bridgewater (13-6, 1-1); Virginia Wesleyan (10-6, 1-1)

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater scored its only run of the game on an RBI single to center field from Kevin Navedo. Jacob Grabeel scored on the play to go up 1-0
  • The Marlins got two in the second on RBI singles to go up 2-1.
  • A bases clearing triple from Miles Christian got the Marlins started in a big fourth inning where they scored six runs. Jaelen Hines drove in Christian in the next at bat. A homerun from Trent Hanchey stretched the teams lead to 8-1 over the Eagles.
  • VWU scored once more in the sixth, twice in the seventh and once in the eighth to finish off the Eagles with a score of 12-1.

  • Bridgewater returns to action on Wednesday, March 23 to take on Eastern Mennonite. Action is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Bridgewater Baseball Field.
