Eagles Take Two From Blue Jays

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team swept Elizabethtown on Sunday winning 11-6 in game one and 4-2 in game two. The Eagles came away with three of four possible wins after playing back-to-back doubleheaders this weekend.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 11, Elizabethtown – 6
  • Records: Bridgewater (4-2); Elizabethtown (0-1)

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles grabbed two runs in the second. Timothy Hopson and Jarret Biesecker both had RBI singles that scored runs in the inning to put BC up 2-0.
  • In the third, seven more runs were scored by Bridgewater. Hopson earned another RBI on a sac fly scoring Brandan Hartman. Kyle Carlson scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Biesecker to add to the lead. Then Brett Tharp drove in Jacob Grabeel on single to short and Kevin Navedo followed that up with an RBI double to right center scoring Tharp and Biesecker. The score now 9-0 Eagles.
  • Elizabethtown battled back in the fifth to score and added two more in the seventh to make it a 9-3 deficit.
  • In the bottom half of that inning, Hunter Clever drove in Jeffrey Snider on a sac fly and Carlson added an RBI to his day driving in Hartman making the score 11-3.
  • The Blue Jays made some noise in the eighth scoring three runs to make it 11-6, but Ryan Costello and Tharp were able to hold off their attack on the mound to secure the 11-6 win.

Match Notes

  • Reid Long went five strong allowing one earned run.
  • Snider had three hits.
  • Tharp, Clever and Hartman each went 2-4 at the plate.
  • Navedo, Biesecker, Hartman and Hopson each had two RBIs.

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 4, Elizabethtown – 2
  • Records: Bridgewater (5-2); Elizabethtown (0-2) 

How It Happened

  • The Blue Jays took their first lead of the day on a sac fly in the top of the first.
  • Bridgewater quickly ended that lead, tying the game at one a piece in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to left field from Kevin Navedo.
  • In the third, Jeffrey Snider blasted a triple to the right center wall. After an error on the throw, he took off for home and scored. Jarret Biesecker also scored on the play.
  • Elizabethtown scored once more in the sixth and Tanner Montgomery scored in the seventh on an error to make it a 4-2 BC lead. That's all the Eagles would need to win this one.

 Match Notes

  • Holdyn Ambrose earned the victory, his first of the season after going five strong giving up one earned run and striking out three.
  • Brett Tharp came in from first base in the ninth to pitch and earned his fourth save of the early season.
  • Biesecker went 2-2 and walked once, Snider had an RBI and Navedo added another RBI to make his total three on the day between both games.
