Baseball Splits Doubleheader With DeSales

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team split its doubleheader vs. DeSales today coming back from a 9-1 deficit to win the first game, 15-13 while losing the second game, 21-11 in non-conference action.

 Game One

 The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 15, DeSales – 13
  • Records: Bridgewater (3-1); DeSales (0-1)
  • Bridgewater came back from a 9-1 deficit to take the victory.

 How It Happened

  • DeSales put up five runs in three innings to start the game, looking as if the Bulldogs would dominate.
  • The Eagles struck in the bottom of the third scoring on an error. Jarret Biesecker scored on the play to make it 5-1.
  • DSU added four more runs, making the score 9-1 after the top of the fourth.
  • BC battled back scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning. Tanner Montgomery drove in Hunter Clever on a sac fly. Next up Biesecker drove in Jacob Grabeel on back-to-back sac flies to make it 9-3. The Eagles finished out the four-run inning with Kevin Navedo doubling to left center scoring Jeffrey Snider and Brett Tharp to make it 9-5.
  • DeSales added two more in the top fifth and in the bottom of the inning, Tharp walked and Kyle Carlson scored to make it 11-6.
  • Bridgewater scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Bulldogs added one more run in the top to make their total 12. Navedo solo homered to lead off the inning while Montgomery drove in another run on a sac fly and Biesecker singled to center to score Carlson.
  • DeSales added another in the top of the seventh and from there Bridgewater took over the game down 13-9 with two innings to go.
  • Navedo reached on an error as Snider scored to begin the rally for BC. Brandan Hartman followed up Navedo with a double to center driving in the run to make it a 13-11 ballgame. Grabeel drove in Hartman, and Carlson scored on a wild pitch to tie things up at 13. The Eagles took the lead to 14-13 when Grabeel scored off an error.
  • Bridgewater finished off DeSales in this back-and-forth game on an eighth inning sac fly from Clever to make the score 15-13.

 Match Notes

  • Tanner Ray earned his first win of the year, with Tharp getting his third save of the short season.
  • Snider went 4-6 and scored three runs. Navedo went 2-4 with four RBIs. Biesecker drove in three runs, Montgomery drove in two runs, Grabeel, Hartman, Biesecker and Tharp each drove in one.

 

 Game Two 

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 11, DeSales – 21
  • Records: Bridgewater (3-2); DeSales (1-1)

 How It Happened

  • Bridgewater went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first when Jarret Biesecker and Jeffrey Snider scored off fielder's choices by Kevin Navedo and Brandan Hartman.
  • DeSales jumped to a 5-2 lead in the top of the second, Biesecker singled to right to score Jacob Grabeel and Brett Tharp drove in Isiah Banks on a sac fly to make the score 5-4.
  • DSU blew the game open with a nine-run inning in the top of the third to make it 14-4. Grabeel singled to right field in the bottom of the inning scoring Navedo and Carlson to make to make the deficit eight.
  • After two more runs from the Bulldogs in the fourth, Hartman drove in Biesecker in the bottom of the inning to make it 16-7.
  • Bridgewater would stay in the game, but not muster enough offense to pull within a nine-point deficit. Tristan Gordon doubled in the sixth to score Tharp making it 19-8. In a final effort in the bottom of the seventh, Ben Anderson scored on a bases loaded walk and Mason Mitchell scored on a passed ball, but the game ended with a 21-11 score. 

 Match Notes

  • Hartman, Gordon and Grabeel each had two RBIs. Tharp and Grabeel each went 2-2 at the plate.
  • The Eagles totaled 10 hits to DeSales 14.

 Up Next

  • The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Elizabethtown back at Veterans Memorial Park on the campus of James Madison University. Action begins with the first game at 1 p.m.
