First Half Deficit Too Much to Overcome for Men's Basketball

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Bridgewater College men's basketball team won the second half of play, but could not overcome a first half deficit falling on the road to Guilford 81-67.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 67, Guilford 81
  • Records: Bridgewater (8-13, 4-9 ODAC), Guilford (16-5, 12-2 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Shod Smith put the Eagles on the board first on a three pointer from a pass by Alec Topper to make it 5-3 Guilford. Topper then tied at 5-5 on a layup continued to push BC to a 8-7 lead on a three pointer from Smith. That would be the Eagles only lead of the half as the Quakers went on a 14-9 run to gain separation and make it a 21-14 game
  • Guilford went on a 18-8 run in the final five minutes of the half, causing three Bridgewater turnovers in the process, to enter the locker room up 44-27
  • After a successful jumper by the Quakers, Zach Hatter sank a shot from the behind the arc for the first BC points of the half. The teams traded points as Guilford still held the advantage from their first half performance. The Quakers had built a 64-45 edge before the Eagles went on a 20-9 run, going 7-10 from the field in the process. Topper and Andy Pack each contributed six points during the stretch while Smith and Hatter added four a piece
  • Both teams went cold for a two minute stretch following the Bridgewater run. Down by eight at 73-65, a costly turnover turned into a fast break dunk for the home team to give Guilford a ten point lead with just over one minute to play. Despite scoring 40 in the half compared to the Quakers' 37, the Eagles' comeback came up just short in Greensboro by a final score of 81-67
