BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater women's basketball team dropped their first game of the season to No. 2/5 Christopher Newport on Wednesday.

How It Happened
- The opening seven minutes featured neither team stretching their lead to more than two possessions. The Captains opened the contest with a pair of free throws by Aniya Simmons but Bridgewater quickly responded as Jaden Alsberry hit Erika Nettles in stride and the graduate student laid it in to even the score. The Eagles took a brief lead a few moments later as CNU drained a three-pointer, but Bridgewater responded with a pair of Alsberry buckets to step ahead 6-5.
- After the early BC lead, the Captains closed the opening frame on a 25-13 run. Simmons added 10 more CNU wrapping up the first quarter with 12 of her team's 30 points. Bridgewater trailed after the opening frame 30-17.
- Christopher Newport opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run before Abby Freeman knocked down a jumper from the free throw line. The Eagles continued to battle keeping the Captains lead within the 20 point range. BC was able to close it down to a 14 point advantage with 2:09 to go in the half after an 11-6 run led by Freeman who added five more points during the stretch. CNU added five unanswered to end the half on top 47-28.
- The Captains opened the third quarter with back-to-back baskets before Jasmyn Pierce kissed a layup off the glass and in for the Eagles. The lead neared 30 points but Bridgewater continued to not let the Captains pull away by too much. Freeman knocked down a pair at the charity stripe and Pierce again used the glass to find the basket to push it to 65-38. BC was able to put together a small run at the end of the quarter as Jay Garcia went to work in the post and found the basket and Freeman was able to knock down a jumper in the final seconds to make it 70-44 after 30 minutes of play.
- The fourth quarter featured lots of defense with both teams combining for just 14 points. Neither team was able to shoot over 30% from the floor in the final frame resulting in a 78-50 victory for Christopher Newport.
Match Notes
- Simmons led all scorers with 18 and Sondra Fan also added 16 for the Captains. Freeman led Bridgewater with 15 and Alsberry added eight.
- The Captains had Simmons in double-double territory after she grabbed 12 rebounds. Riley Corcoran led the battle on the glass for BC grabbing seven rebounds.
- Freeman shot 6/8 from the field and was perfect from beyond the arc and at the charity stripe for the Eagles.
- Bridgewater held an advantage in field goal percentage shooting 46.5% from the floor compared to just 39.1% for the Captains. BC held also held an edge on the glass, 38-34, including 28-16 on the defensive end.
- Bridgewater's 50 points are the second most given up by the No. 2/5 Captains this season. Only East Texas Baptist scored more, putting up 53 in a 63-53 loss on Nov. 11.
