GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Bridgewater College football team capped off the regular season with a 64-22 win over Guilford on Saturday.
The game started with an exclamation mark. On the opening kick,
Viante Tucker found a seam on the return and had just the kicker to beat but was knocked out-of-bounds.Â
BC drove down the field taking 12 plays to get down to the Guilford 4-yard line before the Quakers made a goal line stand on fourth down to force the turnover on downs.Â
The Bridgewater defense forced a quick punt in just 50 seconds to give the offense the ball back with decent field position. A personal foul penalty on Guilford would result in a first-and-goal for BC. On third-down from the 3-yard line
Ronald Robinson Jr. punched it in for a touchdown. After the
Jack Hendren kick the Eagles took a 7-0 lead.Â
The Eagles scored in the opening two minutes of the second quarter when
Jaylen Wood found
Tyler Gilliam over the middle to make it 14-0. On the next Guilford punt following the score,
Dylan Maclachlan fielded it at the Guilford 40 and made a house call returning it for a score to make it 21-0. On the kickoff following the score, the Bridgewater special teams made another big play recovering a fumble on the return at the Guilford 2-yard line. The next play
Derrick Jenkins punched it in for a touchdown. The Eagles worked a fake PAT as
Freddie Watkins carried the ball in for two points to make it 29-0.
The Bridgewater defense had not allowed a first down until the next Guilford drive as the Quakers marched down the field and went for it on fourth down-and-goal. Bailey Baker's pass was picked off in the end zone by
Justin Holley to keep the Quakers scoreless.Â
After an interception defensively by GC their offense marched down the field and scored on a 78-yard drive capped off by a Bailey touchdown pass to make it 29-7.
BC did not need an offensive play to answer as Tucker took the kickoff 90-yards to stretch the lead out to 36-7. The Quakers would score again before the end of the half to make it 36-14 at the intermission.Â
On the first drive of the half Guilford made progress, but
Aaron Nice and
Mekhi Todman teamed up for a sack to force a third down-and-12. After a penalty and a new set of downs the Quakers reset but Nice stepped up again with sacks on back-to-back plays to force a Guilford punt.Â
The Eagles scored on the next possession as
Malcolm Anderson found Jenkins from 25 yards out. Robinson Jr., Anderson and
Euan Spikers added rushing touchdowns as well in the second half to secure the victory for the Eagles.
Nice finished the game with an ODAC record 6.5 sacks. That is also the most by a player in a game in Division III in a game this season. Nice also totaled a game high 10 tackles.Â
Anderson led the BC passing attack as he threw for 138 yards and a score. The senior also added 26 yards on the ground in the win.
The Eagles wrap up the regular season with a 9-1 record and will await the choice of the NCAA Selection Committee to see if they will receive an at large berth into the NCAA Tournament. If BC does not receive a bid they will play in the Neptune Bowl in Virginia Beach next weekend. For more details stay tuned to bridgewatereagles.com.
