FERRUM, Va. – The Bridgewater College football team came away with a 52-28 victory against Ferrum in ODAC action on Saturday.
With the result, the Eagles improve to 7-1 on the season behind a 4-1 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Panthers drop to 1-7 with a 1-4 mark in ODAC games.
Bridgewater got on the board early as
Malcolm Anderson found
Viante Tucker for a 52-yard touchdown and after
Jack Hendren's PAT, the Eagles led 7-0 less than three minutes into the contest.
Before the end of the quarter, Bridgewater tacked on another score as Anderson fell in the end zone from eight yards out to set the score at 14-0 after 15 minutes.
Adding to the lead was
Ronald Robinson Jr. in the second quarter on a two-yard rush. Hendren drilled a 31-yard field goal as time expired in the half to put the Eagles in front 24-0 through the first stanza.
The Eagles tossed for 235 yards in the first half and continued that in the third quarter as
Jaylen Wood sent a pass to
Dylan Maclachlan for a 25-yard score as BC went up 31-0 with 10:38 left in the third quarter.
The Panthers finally got on the board with 6:10 on the clock as Zac Smiley ran in from a yard out and the two-point try was successful to make the score 31-8. On the ensuing drive, Robinson picked up his second touchdown of the day off a 64-yard run as the Crimson & Gold scored once more before the end of the quarter on a Wood five-yard scamper. The Eagles led 44-8 heading to the final 15 minutes.
Joshua Ellerbe put Ferrum back in the game on a 42 yard touchdown run but the Eagles responded with another score of their own as the score was set at 52-15 with 8:15 left in the game.
FC didn't go down without a fight as it added two more touchdowns to trim the deficit down to 52-28, but it was not enough as the Eagles soared to victory.
Anderson went 11-for-17 for 225 yards and a touchdown through the air and also added 20 yards on the ground with a score, as well. Wood added 184 yards on 13-of-16 passing, while
Samuel Dragovich tacked on 28 yards as well.
Robinson finished with 147 yards, which is the best total on the season for a Bridgewater rusher. He scored two touchdowns in the win.
Albert Mensah rushed nine times for 47 yards.
Maclachlan grabbed four catches for a team-high 83 yards and a score, while
Montez Green caught six balls for 77 yards. Tucker had one other catch and finished with 74 yards, while
Derrick Jenkins had two catches for 42 yards and
Evan Welsh had a catch for 28 yards as well.
Defensively,
Val West led the way with eight tackles as all of them were solo.
Aaron Moore registered six tackles and four pass breakups.
Aaron Nice finished with six stops, including 2.0 sacks.
Jaelan Mathews had a fumble recovery and
Tucker Harris had an interception to go along with his touchdown grab earlier in the game.
Bridgewater finished with 666 yards of total offense compared to 394 yards from the Panthers.
The Eagles return to action in a week as they play host to Washington and Lee on Senior Day with kickoff set for 2 pm at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
