ASHLAND, Va. – The Bridgewater College football team traveled to Ashland for a match up with No. 16/18 Randolph-Macon in a showdown of the last two unbeaten teams in the ODAC with the Yellow Jackets coming out on top, 44-7, at Day Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (5-1, 2-1 ODAC) fall for the first time this season, while the Yellow Jackets (6-0, 3-0 ODAC) continue their streak of scoring at least 40 points in every contest this year.
The Yellow Jackets marched down field and scored on the game's opening drive moving the ball 65 yards in less than five minutes. The drive was capped by a 14-yard pass from Drew Campanale to Joey Hunt and the PAT was true, 7-0. R-MC added to the lead six minutes later on a 25-yard quarterback keeper from Campanale, 14-0.
Bridgewater was able to move the ball down the field on a methodical 14-play drive that covered 75 yards ending on a one-yard touchdown run from
Malcolm Anderson as he reached across the pile at the goal line to break the plane.
Jackson Hendren nailed the extra point to cut the lead down to 14-7 with 11:19 to go in the first half.
On the following drive, Randolph-Macon added to its lead with another touchdown using a 16-yard touchdown grab by David Wallis to go up 21-7 and the Yellow Jackets tacked on a field goal before the end of the quarter to take a 24-7 lead into halftime.
R-MC added to the lead with a shade under nine minutes left in the third quarter on a 13-yard run from Nick Hale before Kwesi Clarke went 39 yards for a touchdown to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 37-7 heading to the fourth quarter. The home side was able to tack on one more score before the end of the day to walk away with a 44-7 victory.
Anderson finished the day 14-for-21 for 102 yards through the air, while
Jaylen Wood threw for 46 yards on four completions.
Samuel Dragovich came in for the last drive going 3-for-5 with 31 yards.
Albert Mensah ran for 30 yards on seven touches, while Anderson led the rushing group with 39 total yards on the ground.
Derrick Jenkins and
Dylan Maclachlan each finished with 27 yards receiving as Jenkins grabbed two passed and Maclachlan had three.
Jackson Clark,
Montez Green,
Jamel Johnson,
Viante Tucker and
Kyle Beck all caught two passes as 13 Eagles caught a pass in the loss.
Defensively,
Noah Hines and
Val West paced the team with seven tackles, each with six solo stops. West also recorded a TFL.
Aaron Moore finished with six tackles and 1.0 TFL, while
Shawn Harris had five stops and a TFL.
Noah Robinson made three tackles and forced a fumble that was scooped up by the Yellow Jackets.
For the Yellow Jackets, Campanale was a perfect 17-for-17 through the air for 256 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 33 yards on the ground and a rushing TD. Hale was the game's leading rusher as he dashed for 74 yards on 12 carries.
Bridgewater returns to action on Saturday, October 22, as it hosts Averett on Homecoming weekend. Kickoff is set for 2 pm at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
