Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater men's soccer team defeated Shenandoah with a score of 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
The first half consisted of mostly even play, with a lot of neutral zone time. Both teams were having trouble establishing possessions and creating high quality chances. The half ended at a 0-0 tie, with BC leading in corners, 3-1, and Shenandoah leading in shots 6-5.
The Eagles began to pick up the pace in the second half. In the 62nd minute, they had a chance to capitalize off the hard work when they were awarded a penalty kick. The penalty kick was no good, as goalie Travis Jett made a diving save.
Bridgewater continued to pressure and earned two more corners before netting the game winning goal. The play began with the eventual goal scorer, Matthew Shelor, who was able to create a turnover in the midfield. The ball found the foot of a streaking Trevon Phillips who sent a pass into the box that found Shelor's foot for the goal.
The lone goal happened in the 76th minute, and the Eagles spent the rest of the game on their heels protecting the lead, as the Hornets eventual swarm ended without a goal. Defenders James Yeboah and Parker Richard had a strong game on the backline, not giving up a shot on net during the second half. Tyler Deutsch made three saves in the first half.
Bridgewater is now 4-4 (0-1 ODAC) on the year. They have conference games only from here on out, and will look to grab another win when they travel to Ferrum on Saurday Oct. 2 at 4:30 p.m.
