SALEM, Va. - Bridgewater College pulled off the first upset of the 2021 ODAC Baseball Tournament as the sixth-seeded Eagles won both games Saturday over No. 3 seed Roanoke to advance to the tournament semifinals next weekend.
Bridgewater won Saturday's first game 4-3 and then erased a 2-0 deficit in the second game to take a 6-4 victory.
The Eagles took a quick lead in the opener with two runs in the first inning. Jarret Biesecker and Brett Tharp both walked and Jeffrey Snider was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. With two outs and the sacks still full, Collin Reid singled to right, scoring Biesecker and Tharp for a a 2-0 Bridgewater lead.
Roanoke tied the score with two unearned runs in the second inning, but the Eagles regained the upper hand with a run in the fifth inning. With one out, Biesecker doubled to left and Tharp chased him home with a single, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
The Maroons loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs, but Eagles' pitcher William Flanagan avoided a big inning when he induced Conner Butler to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. The tying run scored on the double-play grounder, but Flanagan retired the next batter, Will Merriken, on a grounder to third to get out of the inning with minimal damage.
Bridgewater pushed across the winning run in the top of the eighth inning. The Eagles loaded the bases on singles by Snider, Brandan Hartman and Reid. Snider raced home on a passed ball to put the Eagles up 4-3.
Roanoke put the first two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth, but Hunter Clever worked out of the jam to preserve the lead. Clever retired the Maroons in order in the ninth to finish off the 4-3 victory.
Junior righthander Waring Garber gave the Eagles a strong start on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing two unearned runs on six hits. Flanagan allowed one run in 1.2 innings on the mound and Clever pitched the final two shutout innings to earn the victory.
The Eagles were the home team on the scoreboard in Game 2.
Bridgewater's Hunter Mohr and Roanoke's Will Turner traded zeroes on the scoreboard for the first four innings before the Maroons took the lead on Will Smith's two-run single in the top of the fifth inning,
The lead didn't last long as the Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.
Biesecker reached on an infield single and Tharp followed with a base hit through the right side of the infield to put two runners on. In a sacrifice situation, Snider reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Navedo then cleared the sacks with a grand-slam homer to left for a 4-2 Eagles' lead.
The Maroons pulled even in the top of the seventh. Mason Staz drove in a run with a base hit to make it a one-run game and Merriken plated a run with a sacrifice fly, tying the score at 4-4.
Bridgewater answered in the bottom of the seventh to reclaim the lead. With one out, Biesecker reached on an infield single and Tharp followed with a homer to put the Eagles on top 6-4.
Tharp walked the bases full in the top of the eighth inning and head coach Ben Spotts summoned Clever from the bullpen for the second time Saturday. With one out and the bases full, Clever struck out Smith and then retired Staz on a fly ball to right to strand three runners on the bases.
Roanoke had two base runners on in the ninth as Clever walked Merriken and hit Gavin Kandrick with a pitch. Clever retired Jonny Wail on a fly ball for the final out of the game to complete the Eagles' sweep.
Mohr kept the Eagles in the game by pitching out of trouble in several innings. Mohr pitched six innings and allowed three runs while scattering 11 hits. Tharp got the win on the mound and Clever picked up a save to go with his first-game victory.
The Eagles, now 13-13 on the season, will face Lynchburg, the tourney's No. 2 seed, in one semifinal matchup. The Hornets swept Washington and Lee on Saturday, winning Game 1 12-8 and taking the second game 12-5.
