BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College shut out Shenandoah, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon to advance to the semifinal round of the ODAC Women's Soccer Tournament.
Bridgewater, the tournament's No. 2 seed, took the lead in the 22nd minute off a corner kick opportunity. Hanna Randolph sent the corner into the box and the ball was volleyed straight up. Makayla Zanders brought the ball down with a header and a loose ball rolled toaward Katelyn Seagraves. Seagraves took a shot from close range and the ball deflected off a defender and past the Hornets' keeper for a 1-0 Eagles lead.
The first half ended with the Eagles leading 1-0. Bridgewater missed several opportunities to pad the margin in the second half.
Just three minutes into the second half, Eagles' forward Skylar Daum had a breakaway, but her shot sailed high.
Two minutes later the Hornets had one of their best chances of the day when they were awarded a free kick from the right side, jsut outside the box. Lexi Cook took the free kick and sent a driving shot to the near post. Kristen Fisher flicked the ball back and her header hit the back post and deflected wide.
The Eagles had another breakaway with Zanders in the 72nd minute, but the Shenandoah keeper came off her line and blocked the shot. Two minutes later, the Eagles missed another chance when Madeline Bohan's shot from inside the box hit the far post and bounced back toward the goal where it was caught by the keeper.
Bridgewater finally added the clinching goal in the 86th minute. The Eagles sent a low cross into the box that was controlled by Cyan Coates. The Eagles' senior left the ball for Alicia Keo and the BC freshman hit her shot from 20 yards into the upper right corner to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Bridgewater held a 21-9 edge in total shots and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Eagles' keeper Sydney Davis finished he day with five saves.
The Eagles, now 9-1 on the season, will host a semifinal game on Friday against Roanoke, the No. 3 seed in the fournament. Roanoke defeated Randolph-Macon 1-0 Tuesday in quarterfinal action. During the regular season, Bridgewater defeated the Maroons 2-1 on Roanoke's home pitch.
