Eagles Drop Pair To No. 14 Yellow Jackets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to No. 14 Randolph-Macon, losing the opener 11-2 and falling in the second game 17-4.

For the first five innings, the opener was a pitcher's duel between Bridgewater's Hunter Mohr and Randolph-Macon's Matt Nickles. Both pitchers took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, yet the Jackets held a 2-1 lead.

Macon scored two runs in the top of the first without the aid of a base hit. With one out, Ethan Iannuzzi was hit by a pitch and then stole second. Mike Nickles walked to put two runners on. Iannuzzi scored from second on an errant pickoff throw to first with Nickles moving to third on the play. Will Haas then worked Mohr for a walk to put runners at the corners. Hass was thrown out trying to steal second, but Nickles scored on the throw to second, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the Eagles scored without a hit. Jacob Grabeel led off with a walk and moved around to third on a failed pickoff attempt. With two outs, Grabeel scored when Jarret Biesecker reached on an infield error, trimming the Macon lead to 2-1.

The Yellow Jackets stretched the lead to 5-1 with three runs in the sixth and then blew the game open with a six-run seventh inning.

In the second game, Randolph-Macon jumped on the Eagles with five runs in the first inning en route to the 17-4 victory.

Jeffrey Snider had two hits for the Eagles in the second game, including his first home run of the season. Jonathan Sexton added a two-run double for the Eagles.

Bridgewater is now 5-6 overall and 4-5 in ODAC play. The Eagles have lost three straight games, all three against a nationally-ranked opponent.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Lexington, Va., to play Washington and Lee.
