BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Hunter Clever and William Flanagan pitched the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 5-2 victory over Washington and Lee in a key ODAC baseball matchup Wednesday afternoon.
With the victory the Eagles, now 10-10 in conference play, clinched at least a No. 6 seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
Clever was sharp in his start on the mound, allowing just two runs, both unearned, on three hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out three and walked two, Flanagan finished up to earn the save, pitching 3.1 shutout innings while allowed just four base hits. Flanagan struck out four and walked two.
Jeffrey Snider led off the third inning with a single for Bridgewater and scored all the way from first on Kevin Navedo's double for a 1-0 Eagles' lead.
The Eagles padded the lead with two runs in the fourth. Isaiah Blanks led off with a walk and moved to second on Kyle Carlson's sacrifice bunt. After Jarret Biesecker walked, Brett Tharp bunted for a base hit to load the bases with one out. After Snider flied out, Navedo came through with the clutch, two-out hit as his single throgh the left side of the infield plated two runs to put the Eagles up 3-0.
The Generals got on the board in the sixth, making it a one-run game. With one out, Like Erdmann was safe on a throwing error and with two outs Jason Volpicelli walked. Eagles coach Ben Spotts went to the bullpen for Flanagan and the righthander's first pitch went to the baskstop, allowing both runners to advance. Zach Perkins then singled to center, scorong both runners to pull W&L to within 3-2.
The Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Tharp walked and raced around to third on a single by Snider. Tharp scored on a wild pitch, giving the Eagles a 4-2 advantage.
Bridgewater added an insurance run in the eighth inning. The Eagles had the bases loaded with two outs when Jacob Grabeel hit a grounder up the middle. The ball was misplayed for an erorr, allowing Tharp to score for a 5-2 Eagles' lead.
Tharp, Snider and Navedo each had two base hits for the Eagles. Navedo was on base all five times, with two hits and three walks. Two of the walks were intentional. The Eagles had plenty of opportunities to blow the game open but left 15 runners on base.
Bridgewater closes out its regular season on Sunday when the Eagles travel to Lynchburg.
