BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The University of Lynchburg handed the Bridgewater College women's tennis team its first loss of the season as the Hornets defeated the Eagles 9-0 Monday afternoon on Mapp Courts.
Both teams entered the contest at 7-0 in conference play. The Eagles are now 8-1 overall while Lynchburg improves to 12-1 overall.
The Hornets took control of the match by sweeping the doubles competition.
At No. 1 doubles, Lynchburg's Christina Harris and Caroline Guill put the Hornets on the board first with an 8-2 victory over Whitney Kiser and Malena Hoover.
Lynchburg's Alissa Anderson and Lauren Pascadlo fought off a strong challenge from Rachel Crawford and Ali Keister for an 8-5 victory at the No. 2 slot.
At No. 3 doubles, Alexa Hardesty and Elizabeth Teefey turned back Emily Daigneault and Ryan Roeber 8-4. Roeber and Daigneault trailed just 5-4 before the Hornets' duo won three straight games to close out the match.
The Hornets swept the singles matches, winning five of the six in straight sets.
The match at No. 4 singles was the lone match to go three sets. Pascadlo won the first set against BC's Hoover by a score of 6-2, but Hoover evened the match by taking the second set 7-5. In a tiebreaker to decide the victor, Pascadlo prevailed 10-7.
