WINCHESTER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team forced a turnover on the clear for the winning goal, defeating Shenandoah 10-8.
Shenandoah had a chance to clear with 1:35 remaining and the game tied at 8-all. Two Eagles pressured goalie Gabe Russell; Russell got the pass away to defenseman Gary Robertson, who under more pressure threw up a ball back in front of goal. Hunter Becker picked it off and fed a wide open Chris Martel for the winner. Eric Husselbaugh would add an insurance goal after BC won the ensuing faceoff.
Becker finished with three assists and four ground balls for the Eagles, while Husselbaugh and Martel each totaled a hat trick and an assist.
The Eagle defense held Shenandoah to three goals through three periods, getting 18 saves from Robbie Noyes. Alesandro Gargano picked up eight ground balls, and Joshua Huffman added four GBs.
The Hornets stormed back from an 8-3 third quarter deficit to score five straight and tie things up with 2:30 remaining.
With the score at 8-6 BC, Noyes saved Stephen Graham and then the Hornets hit the post. Noyes made another stop on Logan Clingerman the next time down the field, before SU struck twice 50 seconds apart to even the contest.
Goals from Connor McLean and Kyle Graham gave Bridgewater a 5-2 lead in the second quarter.
The Hornets got one back before halftime, but a 3-0 BC run in the third featured tallies from Hayden Gourley, Justin Calabrese and Husselbaugh.
Bridgewater is 2-3, 2-3 ODAC and will travel to Randolph on Saturday at noon.
