Eagles Hold Off Panthers For 7-6 Win

Box Score

FERRUM, Va. - Bridgewater overcame several weather delays and a 4-0 deficit Saturday to defeat Ferrum College 7-6 in ODAC action.

The first game started at 1:00 p.m. and did not end until 7:20 p.m. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed and will be made up later this season.

The game was stopped in the second inning with the score tied at 0-0 and when play resumed the Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the second and one more in the third to lead 4-0.

The Eagles started their comeback with three runs in the fourth. Kevin Navedo led off the inning with a single and, with one out, Isaiah Blanks walked. Jonathan Sexton then doubled down the left-field line, scoring both runners to trim the Ferrum lead to 4-2. Sexton ended up at third following on error on his double and Mason Mitchell walked to put runners at the corners. Sexton scored on Timothy Hopson's sacrifice bunt, making it a one-run game.

After Ferrum scored a run in the fifth to lead 5-3, the Eagles pulled even with two runs in the top of the sixth. With one out, Mitchell led off the sixth with an infield single and moved to third when Hopson's grounder was misplayed for an error. With runners at second and third, the Panthers intentionally walked Jarret Biesecker to load the bases. Jacob Grabeel then plated Mitchell with a sacrifice fly to pull the Eagles to within one run, 5-4. Jeffrey Snider followed with a base hit up the middle, scoring Hopson to tie the score.

Bridgewater took the lead for the first time when Hopson delivered a two-run single in the top of the seventh, giving the Eagles a 7-5 lead.

Ferrum tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to pull to within 7-6, but relief ace Tucker Hrasky shut down the Panthers over the final two innings to earn his fourth save of the season, preserving the 7-6 victory. Hrasky retired the six batters he faced in order, striking out five of the six.

The bullpen trio of James Swart, William Flanagan and Hrasky were dominant, providing the Eagles the opportunity to rally for the win. The trio allowed just two runs, one earned, on two hits in the final 6.2 innings. The three releivers combined to strike out 13 batters. Flanagan got the win, allowing one unearned run in 2.2 innings. Flanagan allowed one hit, struck out three and walked one.

Seston was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Hopson finished with three RBIs.

The Eagles, now 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC, will be back in action Tuesday afternoon when they host Shenandoah.
