BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team scored four shorthanded goals in the first half, beating Eastern Mennonite 22-8 on Jopson Field Wednesday.
The Eagles got a combined 13 goals and 15 points from two freshmen. Aunnie Hacker racked up 8 goals, an assist and 4 ground balls, while Kaity Petersheim totaled 5 goals and an assist in her first collegiate game. Hacker's nine points is third-best in program single-game history.
Allison Burris recorded 3 goals and 2 assists, and Melissa Wilson totaled a goal, an assist, four ground balls and a game-high four caused turnovers. Mikaela Brooks made 14 stops to improve her save percentage to 60.0 through two games.
With Bridgewater leading just 3-2 early, the Eagles were shown a yellow card to go a player down. They answered with three shorthanded goals over the next 81 seconds.
Hacker snuck up behind her opponent right on the re-start, forced the turnover and scored. Wilson struck in transition, and then Hacker scored her second man-down goal of the same penalty to make it 6-2.
Bridgewater saw yellow again about six minutes later, and Hacker scored her third shorthanded tally of the half, from Burris' assist.
Petersheim made it 12-3 after picking up a ground ball and making a nice move to the cage. Ashley Venit pushed the lead to 13-3 after Delaney Kerns forced a turnover on the EMU clear.
Bridgewater scored six straight in the second half to extend its lead to 14. Hacker and Petersheim scored five of those goals and another rookie, Brooke Hanson, tallied the final goal of the day for the 22-8 scoreline.
This was the first matchup between the two local schools, as EMU was playing just its third game (and first ODAC contest) as a varsity program. Bridgewater improves to 1-1, 1-0 ODAC and will travel to Randolph-Macon on Saturday.
