BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team picked up a hard-fought conference victory Sunday as the Eagles edged Randolph-Macon 5-4 on Mapp Courts.
The Eagles led 2-1 after doubles action.
The visitors were first off the court with a point when the Yellow Jackets' No. 3 doubles duo of Isabel Wadsworth and Andrea Wine took an 8-1 win over Ryan Roeber and Alexia Will.
Bridgewater's Whitney Kiser and Malena Hoover rolled to an 8-2 win at No. 1 over Avery Smith and Grace Holderman to even the match. Rachel Crawford and Ali Keister also won by an 8-2 score at No. 2 doubles over Mary Grace Gilliam and Daniella Hafner, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The match came down to the final match of the day as the teams ended up splitting the singles contests.
Crawford coasted past Emma Nesselrodt 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Kiser stopped Smith 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 position to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead in the race to five points.
Randolph-Macon then reeled off three straight wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to pull even. At No. 2 singles, BC's Emily Daigneault lost a tough 6-3, 6-4 match to Holderman while Macon's Hafner stopped Hoover 6-2, 7-6 at No. 4. At No. 5 singles, Macon's Gilliam defeated Keister 6-2, 6-4.
With the team score tied at 4-4, the No. 6 singles match was left on the court to decide the final outcome. Wine took the first set from BC's Roeber 6-2, but the Eagles' first-year player stormed back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the match for the home team.
Bridgewater returns to action Friday when the Eagles travel to Randolph College.
