VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Bridgewater College split its ODAC doubleheader Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan, winning the opener 10-5 before the Marlins rallied to take the second game 7-1.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the first game. Kevin Navedo and Jacob Grabeel walked to put two runners on. With runners on the corners, Navedo scored on a bunt by Isaiah Blanks for a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, Mason Mitchell belted a double to the left-center gap, scoring two runners for a 3-0 Eagles lead.
Virginia Wesleyan grabbed the lead with two runs in the bottom of fifth inning and three more in the sixth to lead 5-3. The Eagles then regained the lead with five runs in the top of the seventh.
Blanks singled to lead off the seventh and Jonathan Sexton was safe on an error. A sac bunt by Mitchell moved the runners to second and third with one out. After Jarret Biesecker flied out for the second out, Timothy Hopson walked to load the bases. Jeffrey Snider then delivered a two-run single to tie the score at 5-5. Snider stole second to put runners at second and third before Hunter Clever followed with a single to score one run, giving BC a 6-5 lead. Navedo singled home a run and the final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch to put the Eagles up 8-5.
Tucker Hrasky continued his stellar pitching work out of the bullpen as he worked the final three innings for his second save of the week and third of the season. Hrasky allowed two hits while striking out six batters. For the game, starter Hunter Mohr and relievers William Flanagan and Hrasky combined to strike out 15 batters.
Snider was 2-for-5 in the opener with three RBIs and Navedo, playing his first game of the season, had two base hits.
The Eagles took the lead in Game 2 with a run in the top of the first. Biesecker led off with an infield single and moved to second on Hopson's sacrifice bunt. Snider chased Biesecker home with a single to right for a 1-0 BC lead.
The Eagles carried the 1-0 lead to the bottom of the eighth inning behind RHP pitcher Waring Garber who took a 3-hit shutout into the eighth. Garber allowed the tying run to score in the eighth before leaving with a runner on first and one out. The Marlins exploded for six more runs against the Eagles' bullpen to win the second game 7-1.
The Eagles were limited to five hits in the second game with two of those by Biesecker.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday when they play at Eastern Mennonite.
