Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team lost its season opener 12-10 to Southern Virginia after the Knights scored the final three goals of the game.
The Eagles led 10-9 with eight minutes remaining after Madeline Magill's man-up goal, but SVU's Alissa Johnson struck twice in 25 seconds to retake the lead and the Knights added one more in the final minutes.
Aunnie Hacker had three goals, three assists and two caused turnovers for the Eagles, while Annika Benson added a hat trick. Goalie Mikaela Brooks made 16 saves, including 12 in the second half.
It was Senior Day for five Eagles- Brooks, Dwyer Neal, Grace Stang (3 CT), Jodie Welsh and Olivia Carson. However, it was Bridgewater rookies who recorded the first six points of the game for the Eagles.
After Ashley Venit scored Bridgewater's first goal of the season, Venit and Hacker assisted each other on consecutive goals as the Eagles battled back from an early 4-1 deficit. Hacker then added another goal, before Benson tied the game up at 6-6 heading into halftime with two straight goals.
Benson's final goal in the first half came off a nice passing sequence where Allison Burris fed Hacker at the right post, who quickly sent it back out to a cutting Benson in front of goal for the finish.
Bridgewater took its first lead early in the second half as Hacker finished off a nice feed from fellow freshman Lauren Roberts. Burris' free position goal made it 8-6 Eagles with just under 26 minutes remaining.
SVU rallied to take a 9-8 lead with 14 minutes left in the game. Benson tied it up at 9-9, setting up Magill's go-ahead goal with 8:04 left in the contest.
Bridgewater (0-1) will open ODAC play at home vs. EMU on Wednesday.
