Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals to end the second quarter, but was outscored 3-0 in the third in a 14-9 loss to Hampden-Sydney.
Bridgewater had scored three unanswered to end the first half and pull within two at 8-6.
Trailing 8-3, Justin Calabrese hit a crossbar and then a post just 2:19 apart, but the Eagles finally got a goal from freshman Hayden Gourley. That got the Eagles some momentum and Connor McLean and Chris Martel (man-up) followed to make it a two-goal game at the break.
The Tigers responded with a 3-0 third quarter however, including a goal from Jared Medwar just before the horn to make it 11-6 heading into the final period.
The Eagles made one more rally in the fourth with goals from Alesandro Gargano and Kyle Graham less than a minute apart that made it 12-8 HSC with 12 minutes to goal. Tiger faceoff specialist Jake Brummett went right down to score off the next draw however to help the visitors protect their lead.
Hampden-Sydney had run off four unanswered in the first quarter to open up an early 6-2 advantage, but Martel struck with five seconds left on an outside rip to make it 6-3 and keep the Eagles in range heading into the second quarter.
Martel scored four times and added two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Gargano added a game-high three caused turnovers to go with his goal. Robbie Noyes stopped 14 shots in the cage.
Hampden-Sydney got four goals from Medwar and five points (3G, 2A) from Jack Hayden. Brummett won 15-of-25 faceoffs and totaled nine ground balls.
Bridgewater (0-2, 0-2 ODAC) will travel to face #19 Washington & Lee on Wednesday.
