Late Eagle Goal Waved Off, Roanoke Wins it at Other End

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – BC had an apparent go-ahead goal called off and Roanoke won it at the other end, as the Bridgewater men's lacrosse team lost a 12-11 thriller to open the season.

Connor McLean appeared to have scored the likely game-winner in the final minute but another Eagle player had fallen into the crease and the goal was waved off. Roanoke went down the other end and Owen Curry found Luka Docking for the decisive tally.

The Eagles were also very unlucky not to score on another late fourth quarter possession as both Kyle Graham and Eric Husselbaugh rang the underside of the crossbar and two other BC shots were stopped by Matt Federau (14 saves). Bridgewater, who trailed 11-10 at the time, quickly got the ball back however and tied it up with a Husselbaugh goal.

McLean did score once in the game and added a game-high three assists, while Chris Martel and Husselbaugh each totaled four goals and one helper.

Bridgewater went 19-for-25 on faceoffs, with Mason Gauntt winning 17-of-22 and picking up 14 ground balls.

The game did not feature a shot on goal for over five minutes until Jake Pangle put an attempt on frame that was saved by Federau. Each side took a timeout to set up their first score of the game, with Husselbaugh finishing off Hayden Gourley's pass to answer Roanoke's opener.

Martel scored with just eight seconds left in the first quarter to make it 2-2, with a patient move off a pass by Graham.

Bridgewater had a lead twice in the second quarter. Husselbaugh found Hunter Becker with a great pass all the way through the Roanoke defense to the back post to make it 3-2 Eagles early in the period.

Roanoke took back a one-goal advantage right as the game's first man-up opportunity had cleared, but nice drives by McLean and Husselbaugh restored a 5-4 BC lead.

Roanoke took a 6-5 lead into halftime as Luke Kammerman picked up a rebound and scored just before the horn.

Bridgewater went down by two goals in the third period but Martel racked up two goals and an assist in under two minutes to put BC back on top. His first goal in that run came after picking off a pass from Federau right in front of the cage.

The Eagles are 0-1, 0-1 ODAC and will host Hampden-Sydney next Saturday.
