BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter Tuesday night and pulled away for its fourth straight ODAC victory with a 92-63 decision over Virginia Wesleyan.
After the Marlins' Danielle Lehner scored the game's first bucket, Ahlia Moone and Mary Ruth Shifflett hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a quick 6-2 Bridgewater lead.
The Marlins tied the score at 6-6, but the Eagles reeled off 12 straight points to gain control. Jaden Alsberry hit two foul shots and Jada Gross scored from long range for an 11-6 Eagles lead. Gross hit again from 3-point range and Erika Nettles worked inside for a bucket, giving the Eagles their first double-digit lead, 16-6. A steal by Moone led to layup by Shifflett, making the score 18-6.
After a bucket by Marlins forward Sabrina Jones, Alsberry worked the paint for a bucket, keeping the Eagles up by 12 points, 20-8. Lehner scored on a layup, pulling the Marlins to within 10 points, 20-10 after one quarter of action.
Julia Williams and Gross both drained 3-pointers midway through the second quarter as the Eagles increased the advantage to 18 points, 36-18, with 4:42 left in the half. At the break, Bridgewater held a 40-25 lead.
The Eagles blistered the nets in the third quarter, outscoring the Marlins 35-17 to pull away for a 75-42 lead.
Twelve Eagles broke into the scoring column and five cracked double figures. Gross led the Eagles with a game-high 19 points and Moone was next in line with 14. Taylor Stafford added 13 points, followed by Alsberry with 12 points and Shifflett with 10.
Shifflett filled up the boxscore as she dished out a team-high six assists to go along with four rebounds and four steals. The Eagles finished with 27 assists on 33 made field goals. In addition to Shifflett's six, Madison Baum dished out five assists and Diamond Huskey added four.
Bridgewater's full-court pressure defense forced 35 turnovers and the Eagles finished the night with 26 steals. Nettles led the team with six steals.
The Eagles battled the Marlins to a 42-42 standoff on the boards with Alsberry pacing the home team with seven rebounds.
Bridgewater knocked down 13 shots from 3-point range, making 40.6 percent (13-of-32). The Eagles also had a solid night at the free throw line, making 13-of-18 attempts for 72.2 percent.
Jones led the Marlins with a double-double as she scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
The Eagles return to action next Monday when they host Southern Virginia in a non-conference contest.
