Volleyball Triumphant in Five Set Battle of the Eagles

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team came back from down 2-1 to defeat the Mary Washington Eagles 3-2 on Wednesday night in Nininger Hall. It is Bridgewater's first win over Mary Washington since 2013.

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater took a very scrappy first set 25-22 to start the match. The Eagles recorded 17 kills in the frame compared to the vistors seven
  • The home Eagles dropped sets two and three 25-18 and 25-17
  • Needing to take the set to extend the match, Bridgewater won the final six points of the set in a stretch that featured three kills from Jessica Bissmeyer and three aces from Ashley Rutherford
  • Bridgewater dominated set five, holding Mary Washington to their worst hitting percentage of the evening when it counted the most
  • Bridgewater outhustled Mary Washington with six Eagles posting double-digit digs compared to three on the other side of the net

  • Bridgewater won the offensive battle, earning 51 kills compared to Mary Washington's 44. Bridgewater also ran the defensive show, producing 87 digs compared to Mary Washington's 71
  • Bissmeyer had a match and career-high 18 kills to go with 14 digs for the double-double
  • Ashley Casey joined Bissmeyer in double-digit kills with 16 and also had a double-double with 10 digs
  • Emma Anderson and Rutherford had 10 and 11 digs, respectively
  • Madeline Walker shined in the libero jersey, recording a career-high 26 digs
