Eagles Come Up Just Short At Ferrum, 65-62

FERRUM, Va. - Bridgewater went on the road Saturday and took Ferrum to the wire before falling 65-62 to the Panthers in ODAC action.

The Panthers jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first six minutes of play and controlled action in the opening half.

Ferrum took its biggest lead of the first half, 30-16, at the 4:52 mark. but then the Eagles put together a 10-3 spurt to cut the margin to single digits. David Oliveras and Ferrum's Jamar Butler traded 3-pointers before a 3-ball from Zach Hatter pulled the Eagles to within 33-22.

A dunk by Jalil Langston and two foul shots from Hatter pulled the Eagles to within seven points, but Ferrum scored the final three points of the half to lead by 10, 36-26 at the break.

Just like the first half, Ferrum started the second half with a quick spurt to take its biggest lead of the game. The Panthers outscored the Eagles 9-2 in the first two minutes to lead 45-28.

The Eagles then held the Panthers scoreless from the field for the next seven minutes and took the lead with a 20-1 run,

Andy Pack started the run with a 3-pointer and, following a Ferrum foul shot, Alec Topper converted a three-point play, cutting the Panthers lead to 46-34.

Buckets by Oliveras, Topper and Matt Ciccone sliced the margin in half as the Eagles pulled to within six, 46-40.

Oliveras worked inside for a layup and Hatter drained a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game, 46-45, with 12:41 left. Langston then hit from long range and the Eagles led by two 48-46.

Ferrum then answered with an 11-2 spurt to lead by seven 57-50 with 6:40 remaining.

The Eagles had one more run left and regained the lead with 2:55 left to play.

Four straight points by Pack and two foul shots from Topper trimmed the margin to two, 58-56. Two more free throws by Topper evened the score before a 3-pointer by Ferrum's Kajuan Madden-McAfee put the Panthers up by three, 61-58. Topper and Ciccone both scored in the paint to put the Eagles on top 62-61 with 2:55 to go.

That proved to be the final points for the Eagles as the Panthers scored the final four points of the game.

Carrington Young's bucket put the Panthers ahead 63-62 at the two-minute mark and the Eagles were unable to answer. Bridgewater had four possessions with the chance to regain the lead, but came away empty on each trip.

Topper led the Eagles with 15 points and Oliveras added 10.
