BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team won a second straight hard-fought one-goal contest, beating Baldwin-Wallace 7-6 on Jopson Field.
The Eagles broke through for the winner with under five minutes to go as defender Melissa Wilson went on the attack and fed freshman Madeline Magill.
Bridgewater got a monster game in the cage from Mikaela Brooks, who made 14 saves with just six goals allowed.
It was the second straight Eagles contest where neither side ever led by more than two (with each team claiming a two-goal advantage just once on each occasion), following Thursday's 10-9 victory at Sewanee.
The visitors took a 3-1 lead midway through the first half, but Brooks saved all six shots she saw the rest of the period as the teams hit the break tied 3-3.
After Dwyer Neal opened the scoring in the first minute in transition, Bridgewater's defense forced a shot clock violation and then saw three straight shots saved by B-W goalie Ashleigh Hildreth.
Trailing 3-1 after three straight Yellow Jacket goals, some quick thinking got Bridgewater back in rhythm. With a defender disputing an out-of-bounds call, Bridget O'Donnell pounced with a quick restart and found Jacqueline DiFulvio wide open for the goal.
Neal hit the crossbar, and Bridgewater finally tied it at 3-3 on the counterattack after another Brooks save. DiFulvio was fouled with BC in the numbers, and converted the eight-meter.
Baldwin-Wallace broke a streak of seven straight Brooks saves to take a 4-3 second half lead, but Neal responded with a free position goal and Jodie Welsh gave BC the lead with 20:46 remaining.
A big save from Brooks was matched at the other end by a tough Hildreth save, and Neal located the ground ball before anyone else, flipping it into the goal for a 6-4 lead.
It was then Baldwin-Wallace's turn to come back from a two-goal deficit, setting up Magill's game winner.
Bridgewater improves to 3-3 and will host McDaniel on Saturday.
