BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College opened its ODAC slate Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan, dropping the opener 3-2 and winning the second game 15-4.
The Eagles came out on the short end of a pitcher's duel in Game 1 as Bridgewater starter Hunter Mohr and Marlins' starter Jacob Pilarski limited the run production.
The Marlins took the lead with two runs in the fourth. With two outs and no one on base, Tyriq Campbell sliced a double down the right field line. Zack Burkhardt followed with a homer to left to put the visitors ahead 2-0.
Bridgewater tied the score with two runs in the sixth inning. Luke Paczewski led off with a single, but was erased at second on Matthew LaPrade's infield grounder. JT Creed walked to put runners at first and second and both runners moved up on Jacob Grabeel's long fly ball to center. Tanner Montgomery then delivered a clutch two-run single to center to tie the score.
The Marlins scored what proved to the winning run in the top of the seventh off Eagles' reliever Hunter Clever. Nick Price led off with a bloop single to left and took second on a groundout. Price took third on a single by Dylan Gentry and scored on Miles Christian's sacrifice fly, giving the Marlins the 3-2 lead.
Adams Brooks worked two shutout innings for the Marlins and Andrew Lowe earned the save with a scoreless ninth.
Mohr pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Clever pitched well, but took the loss. The freshman allowed one run on three hits in 3.1 innings.
Bridgewater jumped ahead in Game 2 with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Jarret Biesecker led off with a walk and Jacob Talley followed with a double. After Kevin Navedo walked to load the bases, Biesecker scored on Paczewski's grounder to third, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Talley scored on a wild pitch and Navedo crossed the plate on an infield error as the Eagles grabbed a 3-0 lead.
Bridgewater added four more runs in the fifth inning. Biesecker led off with a single and moved around to third on a single by Talley. Navedo chased Biesecker home with a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 Eagles' lead. Paczewski followed with a run-scoring double and Creed added a RBI-triple to push the margin to 6-0. Creed scored on LaPrade's groundout, increasing the lead to 7-0.
Eagles' starter Tucker Garrison cruised through five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth. Christian led off with an infield single and Austin Obenour reached on an error. Afer an infield grounder forced Christian out at third, Pilarski singled to put the Marlins on the scoreboard. Zack Clark then belted a towering three-run homer to left-center and the Marlins were suddenly back in game, trailing just 7-4.
Bridgewater provided a response in the bottom half of the sixth with seven runs to open up a 14-4 advantage. Three walks to start the inning loaded the sacks for Navedo and the Eagles second baseman delivered with a two-run single, making the score 9-4. Paczewski and Creed added run-scoring hits to increase the lead to 11-4 and then Paczewski scored on a passed ball to make it 12-4. After Brett Tharp was hit by a pitch, Phillip Herber belted a two-run triple to center, giving the Eagles a commanding 14-4 lead.
Garrison worked six innings to pick up the win, his third of the season against no losses. The lefty allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Waring Garber finished up, allowing two hits in his three innings on the mound.
Paczewski was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Creed was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Navedo and Herber both drove in three runs.
The Eagles, now 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC, are back in action Tuesday when they host Christopher Newport in non-conference action.
