Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Christopher Newport finally put the Bridgewater College Eagles away with a six-run ninth inning Tuesday to win a non-conference slugfest, 20-12. The two teams combined for 32 runs and 44 base hits.
The Captains jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in their first two innings of work, but the Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the second.
Matthew LaPrade led off the inning with a single and took third on Brett Tharp's one-out single to center. With two outs, Jeffrey Snider doubled, scoring LaPrade to put the Eagles on the board. With runners at second and third, Jarret Biesecker singled, scoring Tharp. On the throw home to hold Snider at third, Biesecker headed to second. The CNU catcher threw to second, catching Biesecker in a rundown. Snider broke for home and beat the throw, making it a one-run game. Jacob Talley followed with a single, but Biesecker was thrown out at the plate, trying to score from second as the Captains got out of the inning still ahead 4-3.
CNU scored three times in the fourth to lead 7-3, but the Eagles fought back with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Creed led off the inning with a double and Tharp followed with a homer, cutting the CNU lead to 7-5.
Four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth pushed the CNU advantage to 13-5, but once again the Eagles rallied, this time with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Luke Paczewski's two-out, bloop double to right plated the first run of the inning and LaPrade and JT Creed added run-scoring hits to keep the inning alive. Tharp doubled home two more runs as the Eagles closed the gap to 13-10.
CNU added a run in the seventh to lead 14-10, but the Eagles trimmed the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
LaPrade and Creed led off with singles and, with one out, both advanced on a groundout. Snider chased both runners home with a single to pull the Eagles to within two runs, 14-12.
The Captains tacked on six more runs in the top of the ninth to clinch the 20-12 victory.
LaPrade went 5-for-5 at the plate to lead the Eagles' offense. Biesecker and Snider each finished 4-for-5 with Snider driving in three runs. Creed was 3-for-4 while Tharp finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
The Eagles, now 10-4 on the season, return to action Wednesday with a conference game at Washington and Lee.
