Box Score SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College closed the first quarter with a 10-0 run Thursday night to take a 28-9 lead and the Maroons went on to defeat Bridgewater College 85-58 in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament played at the Salem Civic Center.
The Eagles scored first on a bucket by Kayla Darr, but Roanoke scored the next seven points to take the lead for good. Roanoke pushed the margin to 13-5 before Jasmyn Pierce knocked down a jumper to pull the Eagles to within 13-7 with 3:42 left in the first quarter.
Ayanna Scarborough made two free throws and Kayla Kinsler added 1-of-2 at the foul line to put the Maroons ahead 16-7. A steal and layup by Whitney Hopson increased the Roanoke lead to 18-7 before Claire Mocarski grabbed an offensive rebound and scored inside to trim the Roanoke lead to 18-9 with 2:25 left in the opening quarter.
The pivotal 9-0 spurt to close the quarrter put the Maroons in control. Kristina Harrel hit a jumper and Renee Alquizza added a 3-pointer to make it 23-9. Hopson came up with another steal and dished to Alquizza for a layup and a 25-9 Maroons lead with 1:27 left in the quarter. Hopson ended the run with a 3-pointer with just 13 seconds left in the quarter to put Roanoke ahead 28-9.
Bridgewater was plagued by fouls in the first quarter as the Eagles were whistled for nine fouls and Roanoke converted 10-of-13 foul shots in the first 10 minutes.
The Eagles were unable to make a run at the Maroons in the second quarter as Roanoke extended its lead to 47-22 at the half.
Roanoke finished the game shooting 42.6 percent from the floor (26-for-61). Roanoke took 41 free throws and made 29 for 70.7 percent.
The shooting numbers tell the story for the Eagles. Bridgewater shot just 31.7 percent from the field (20-for-62. The Eagles were just 4-of-22 from 3-point range (18.2 percent) and at the foul line the team hit just 14-of-32 for 43.8 percent.
Madison Baum was the only Bridgewater player in double figures with 10 points. Leading scorer Ahlia Moone played just 16 minutes before fouling out in the third quarter and finished with just one point. Hopson led four Maroons in double figures with 12 points.
The Eagles finish the season with a 14-12 record, their second consecutive winning season.
