Box Score
BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team pitched a first half shutout in its season opener, with the Eagles beating Hood 14-3.
An Eagle defense that was missing two All-ODAC performers in last spring's loss to Hood was dominant, not allowing a goal until 21:54 remaining in the second half. Tori Hudson and Jodie Welsh each had three caused turnovers.
Senior Dwyer Neal's 100th career tally capped a great start for the Eagles, who scored four times in 4:16 to take an early 4-0 lead. Neal finished with five goals, an assist, two caused turnovers, two ground balls and four draw controls.
Brooks (three saves) and the Eagle defense withstood an early Hood flurry, with Samy Brandt hitting the crossbar from close range and the goalie stopping a chance from Sydney Thomas.
The Eagles countered quickly off the save, with Allison Burris (two goals, two assists) feeding Bridget O'Donnell to get Bridgewater on the board.
Jacqueline DiFulvio made it 2-0 on a free position shot, and a solo move from Shannon Rogers pushed the early lead to 3-0.
Defender Melissa Wilson hit the bar on another quick BC counterattack, and DiFulvio picked off a pass on the clear and went in on a breakaway that was saved. Neal broke a scoreless run with her second straight to make it 5-0 Eagles.
Burris assisted Madeline Magill and then scored herself late in the first half to send Bridgewater into the break with a 7-0 advantage.
Brooks started off the second half with a nice save on Laura Skorobatsch, with O'Donnell soon scoring at the other end to push the lead to 8-0.
Neal scored twice in quick succession to make it 11-2 with 15 minutes left, and then fed Wilson to push the gap to double-digits.
The Eagles (1-0) will go on the road Saturday with a trip to face another Commonwealth Conference school in Albright.
