BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College scored the game's first 19 points Wednesday night and led by double figures the rest of the way in a 77-47 conference victory over Virginia Wesleyan.
With the victory, the Eagles improved to 9-8 overall and 8-2 in the ODAC. The win was the sixth straight for the Eagles and keeps them in a tie for first-place in the conference standings.
Makayla Johnson banked in a short jumper in the paint and Madison Baum penetrated the Marlins' defense for a layup, giving the Eagles a quick 4-0 lead. Kayla Darr then hit Bridgewater's first 3-pointer of the game, making the score 7-0.
Ahlia Moone came off the bench and knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers as the lead swelled to 17-0. Jasmyn Pierce added two foul shots to complete the 19-0 first-quarter run.
Isis Moore made 1-of-2 at the foul line to put the Marlins on the board at the 3:51 mark of the opening quarter. Virginia Wesleyan hit its only field goal of the quarter with 38 seconds on the clock when Sabrina Jones worked inside for bucket as the quarter ended with the Eagles holding a 26-7 lead.
The Eagles led 35-18 at the half and Darr opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to push the margin to 20 points.
Bridgewater held a 40-22 advantage with 7:01 left in the third quarter. The Eagles then outscored the Marlins 24-4 during the remainder of the third quarter to lead 64-26.
Moone continued her strong play with 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She made 4-of-6 shots from long range and 5-of-5 at the foul line. Madison Baum added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Claire Mocarski pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 52-44 advantage on the boards.
The Eagles held the Marlins to 24 percent shooting from the floor (12-for-50) while forcing 30 turnovers.
Bridgewater is back in action Saturday afternoon when they travel to play the University of Lynchburg.
