Maroons Hold Off Eagles In Second Half

SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College took a 39-32 lead at the half and held off the Bridgewater College Eagles in the final two quarters to take a 78-73 victory Thursday night in ODAC action.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before the Maroons responded with a 15-2 run to lead 15-8 with 3:54 left in the first quarter. Roanoke led by five points, 30-25, after one quarter of play.

A bucket by Kristina Harrell at the 3:54 mark of the second quarter gave Roanoke its largest lead of the first half, 30-19. The Eagles answered with an 11-3 spurt, capped by a Lindsay Estes jumper, to pull within three, 33-30. Roanoke closed the half with a 6-2 flurry to lead 39-32 at the break.

Roanoke scored the first four points of the second half to go up 43-32. The Maroons still led by eight, 44-36, when the Eagles reeled off eight unanswered points to tie the score. Ahlia Moone knocked down a 3-pointer and then added 1-of-2 at the foul line to pull the Eagles even at 44-44 with 4:14 left in the third quarter.

Roanoke's Molly Hassell and Moone traded buckets before a 3-pointer by Estes gave the Eagles their first lead of the second half, 49-46, with 2:20 left in the quarter. Roanoke evened the score at 51-51 before Madison Baum made 1-of-2 foul shots for a one-point Eagles lead. The Maroons scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 55-52 entering the final 10 minutes of play.

The Eagles twice cut the deficit to a single point early in the final quarter, but the Maroons managed to maintain the upper hand. A 3-pointer by Moone pulled the Eagles to within 60-59, but Roanoke used a 13-2 run to take its biggest lead of the night, 73-61, with just 2:16 left to play.

The Eagles had one run left and an 11-2 spurt sliced the margin to three points with 29 seconds remaining. Estes knocked down a 3-pointer and Baum added a layup to pull the Eagles to within seven. After Baum made 1-of-2 at the foul line, Moone hit two free throws to cut the margin to four 73-69. Hassell made two clutch foul shots for the Maroons before Moone hit from beyond the arc to make it a one-possession game, 75-72, with 29 seconds left.

Bridgewater was forced to foul and Hassell once again made two straight to push the margin back to five, 77-72. Baum was fouled on a drive to the basket, but the Eagles guard was unable to keep it a one possesson game as her second foul shot rimmed out with just 18 seconds left.

Moone matched her career-high with 29 points and Estes added 13 for the Eagles. Hassell scored 23 for the Maroons.

Bridgewater, now 3-8 overall and 2-2 in the ODAC, is back on the road Saturday for another conference matchup at Randolph College.
