Eagles Lead Wire-To-Wire In Win Over Ferrum

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College scored the first 10 points of the game Saturday afternoon and never trailed in a 78-60 ODAC victory over Ferrum College.

Claire Mocarski put the Eagles on the board with a layup and Mary Ruth Shifflett added a 3-pointer for a quick 5-0 Eagles' lead. Madison Baum made two free throws and Shifflett scored inside, pushing the margin to 9-0. Diamond Huskey hit 1-of-2 at the foul line for a 10-0 Bridgewater lead with 6:27 left in the opening quarter.

Arin Bunker hit two foul shots for Ferrum's first points, but Kayla Darr countered with two foul shots to keep the lead at 10, 12-2. After Jessy Nichols made a jumper for the Panthers, Makayla Johnson added a 3-pointer, giving Bridgewater its biggest lead of the quarter, 17-4, with 4:18 left.

Ferrum finished the quarter with a 10-3 run to close the gap to 20-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Bunker knocked down a 3-pointer on the first possession of the second quarter to pull the Panthers within three, 20-17, but Bridgewater pushed the lead back to double figures with a 9-0 spurt, sparked by five points from Ahlia Moone.

The lead hovered around the 10-point mark for the rest of the half. Darr hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds on the clock to send the Eagles to the break with a 42-30 lead.

Ferrum's Jacy Marvin opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer before another 9-0 spurt by the Eagles broke the game open. Johnson scored inside and Moone hit from beyond the arc to put the Eagles up 48-34. Darr scored off an assist from Shifflett and Moone added a layup for a 52-34 Bridgewater lead with 7:23 left in the third quarter.

The Eagles held a 13-point advantage after three quarters and led by as many as 22 points in the final quarter before finishing off the 78-60 victory.

Moone came off the bench and scored 22 points to lead the Eagles. Darr added 12 points as all 11 Bridgewater players scored in the game. Baum dished out six assists and turned the ball over just once. Shifflett filled up the stat sheet with eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals. The Eagles' bench continued to produce at a high level, combining for 46 points. In addition to Moone's 22, Jasmyn Pierce and Nina Novosel each scored nine. 

Kayla Cabiness and Marvin each scored 12 points for the Panthers and Jasmine Wilson added 10.

Bridgewater, now 6-8 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC, returns to action Wednesday night when the Eagles travel to Shenandoah.
