Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team defeated both Washington & Lee and Ferrum in straight sets on Saturday, September 28.

Game One: Bridgewater 3, Washington & Lee 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-19)

Bridgewater started the day with a sweep of the reigning ODAC champions. It was the Eagles first win over the Generals since 2013. The teams started the set trading points until W&L took a 16-11 lead. Jessica Bissmeyer helped the Eagles tie the game and eventually take the advantage with six straight serves and a slew of General attacking errors. Bridgewater held on to the advantage and ended the set on a Hope Jennings kill.

The Eagles took an early 5-1 edge in set two. The Generals slowly found a way back into the game and were able to make it 23-22. A emphatic Emily Hanger kill made it 24-22. She teamed up with Jennings for the set winning block to put Bridgewater up 2-0.

The home team struggled at the beginning of set three but did not give up. Lisa O'Grady put down three kills in the comeback to tie the score at 15-15. Once the Eagles got the lead, the held on until the very end. Rachel Gaston put down the game winning kill to give the Eagles the win.

Gaston had a match high 14 kills to go with 11 digs. Taylor McNeely picked up a match high 22 digs, nine more than any other player on the court.  Emily Hanger contributed to five blocks, and Grace Hayes had 35 assists.

Game Two: Bridgewater 3, Ferrum 0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-21)

The Eagles started the first set with a bang, only allowing the Panthers 14 points. Gaston racked up six kills in her only action of game two.

Bridgewater held the Panthers to a -.108 hitting percentage in set two. Sarah Kerns controlled the net in the set, picking up three straight over pass kills. Ferrum gained momentum in the third, but not enough to stop the Eagles. Bridgewater racked up 38 total kills in the game compared to Ferrum's 18.

Kerns had a match high seven kills followed by Gaston's six and Jennings with seven. Jyailah Friendly picked up 15 digs while Bissmeyer had 17 assists.

Bridgewater is now 17-1 on the year. It is the best start in program history since the 2002 season where the Eagles started 18-0. The team will take a week break from game play and returns to action on October 9 with a match at crosstown rival Eastern Mennonite. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
