BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team earned its most impressive victory to date, beating 2017 ODAC champion Hampden-Sydney 14-13 on Jopson Field Wednesday night.

Eric Husselbaugh scored the winning goal on a crease dive with 21 seconds remaining, and Mason Gauntt (13-of-25 faceoffs, 12 ground balls) won the final faceoff to ice it.

The Eagles scored the game's final five goals and held Hampden-Sydney scoreless over the final 17:28 behind 23 saves by Hunter Bagby- who stopped 15 shots with just four goals allowed in the second half.

Husselbaugh and MacLeish each recorded three goals and an assist, while senior LSM Jake Truman scored a hat trick along with two caused turnovers.

Truman had caused a turnover right off the opening faceoff, but Husselbaugh was stopped from close range by HSC goalie Nick Arcuri. MacLeish picked up a ground ball and scored to make it 1-1 in the first quarter, and Husselbaugh tied it at 2-2 later in the period with a nice move.

The Eagles were within one at 4-3 after Jake Pangle shrugged off a push to score, and then 5-4 on Chris Martel's man-up goal early in the second quarter.

Hampden-Sydney opened up a 9-4 lead heading into halftime, but Hunter Callan assisted Connor McLean on the opening possession of the second half, and Truman's first long pole tally made it 9-6.

Truman would score again to make it 11-7 Hampden-Sydney, and MacLeish edged the Eagles to within two later in the third with a great screen from Pangle.

Truman completed his third quarter long-pole hat trick with 21 seconds on the clock to make it 13-11 Tigers, exactly 15 minutes before Husselbaugh's game-winner.

Husselbaugh got the Eagles to within one with 12:44 left in the fourth quarter. Hampden-Sydney hit two posts on the same possession, and MacLeish finally tied it at 13-13 with 2:40 remaining to set up the late winner.

This was the Eagle program's first victory over one of the perennial top-four ODAC teams, who have combined for all 38 ODAC championships and 41 NCAA tournament game victories since 1981.

With the win, Bridgewater improves to 11-4, 4-4 ODAC and currently sits in sixth place in the conference standings. Hampden-Sydney is third at 11-4, 6-2, meaning a potential postseason rematch could be in play pending results around the league down the stretch.
