Bridgewater Baseball Wins Fourth Straight

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Bridgewater took the lead with three runs in the second inning Tuesday afternoon and the Eagles led the rest of the way to pick up their fourth straight win, 13-8, over the University of Mary Washington.

Bridgewater got on the board in its first at-bat. Jarrett Biesecker led off with a walk and scored on a two-out triple by Brett Jones. The lead didn't last long as the hosts scored twice in the bottom of the first to lead 2-1.

The Eagles answered with three runs in the top of the second. Bridgewater loaded the bases on singles by Cameron Stanley and Phillip Herber and a walk to Matthew LaPrade. Biesecker singled home two runs to give the Eagles the lead. LaPrade was thrown out at third on Biesecker's hit. Two Mary Washington throwing errors allowed Biesecker to score, giving Bridgewater a 4-2 lead.

Luke Paczewski's solo homer in the third made the score 5-2 and the Eagles blew the game open with a six-run outburst in the fourth inning. LaPrade struck out to lead off the fourth, but reached first on a passed ball. Biesecker sngled to put two runners on before an infield error allowed LaPrade to score, making the score 6-2. Jacob Talley plated a run with an infield grounder and Jones followed with a two-run homer, pushing the margin to 9-2. Stanley and Paczewski reached on singles and both scored on a base hit by Kevin Navedo as the lead increased to 11-2.

Mary Washington cut the deficit to 11-6, but the Eagles added some insurance with two runs in the top of the eighth. The Eagles loaded the bases on a walk, a hit batsman and a single by Biesecker. Jacob Grabeel followed with a two-run single to left, giving the Eagles a 13-6 lead.

Biesecker continued his torrid hitting pace, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. During Bridgewater's four-game winning streak, Biesecker is 12-for-19 for a .631 batting average. Stanley had three base hits while Jones, Paczewski and Grabeel each finished with two hits. Jones led the Eagles with three RBIs.

Seven pitchers saw action for Bridgewater with freshman Brett Tharpe getting the win. Tharpe worked 1.2 shutout innings and allowed one hit while striking out two. Fellow freshmen Devin Page and Bryce Masters each pitched one shutout inning for the Eagles.

Bridgewater, now 7-10 overall, returns to action Wednesday when the Eagles host Shenandoah in ODAC action.
