Eagles Roll To Big Win Over Cougars

Box Score

DANVILLE, Va. - Bridgewater College erased an early 5-3 deficit Tuesday afternoon with 14 unanswered runs to defeat Averett University, 17-5, in non-conference baseball action.

Bridgewater jumped out to a quick lead with three runs in the first inning. Jarrett Biesecker walked to lead off the game and Matthew LaPrade followed with a single. Jacob Talley then fouled out to first, but both baserunners moved up a base on a throwing error by the first baseman. Brett Jones walked and Biesecker scored on the ball four wild pitch to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. Cameron Stanley singled to score LaPrade, making the score 2-0. Jones and Stanley each advanced on a wild pitch and another wild pitch allowed Jones to score for a 3-0 Eagles' lead.

Averett roughed up Eagles' starter Tristan Daywalt for five runs on six hits in the second inning to take a 5-3 lead.

Daywalt then settled in and blanked the Cougars over the next three innings while allowing just one base hit to keep the Eagles close as the score remained 5-3 going into the sixth.

The Eagles put five runs on the board in the top of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Stanley led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a balk, Brett Tharpe reached on a walk and stole second before a double by Garrison Wright down the left-field line plated two runs to tie the score at 5-5. After Jacob Grabeel walked, Biesecker singled to load the sacks, still with no outs. LaPrade walked to force home a run before back-to-back sacrifice flies by Talley and Jones put the Eagles ahead 8-6.

The Eagles padded the lead with a four-run seventh. Stanley again led off the inning with a double and Tharpe was hit by a pitch. An infield single by Wright loaded the bases and Grabeel followed with a two-run single through the left side for a 10-5 Bridgewater lead. A sacrifice bunt by Biesecker moved runners to second and third and LaPrade followed with a sac fly to center, scoring Wright to make it 11-5. Talley then chased Grabeel home with a double to left, making the score 12-5.

Bridgewater finished the game off with a five-run ninth. Walks to Grabeel and Biesecker followed by a single to center by LaPrade loaded the bases with no outs. A single by Talley plated one run and a bases-loaded walk to Jones scored another, making the score 14-5. With the bases still full, Kevin Navedo plated a run with a single for a 15-5 lead. Brett Lysohir drew a walk to force in another run and Tharpe plated the Eagles' final run with a single to left-center.

Daywalt overcame the rough second inning to pick up the win on the mound. The Eagles' senior allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking one.

The bullpen did the rest as Sam Imeson, Ryan Skadra and Tucker Garrison blanked the Cougars over the final four innings. Imeson pitched two hitless innings followed by a hitless eighth from Skadra. Garrison allowed just one hit in the ninth to finish up for the Eagles.

Wright was 4-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs to lead the 17-hit attack. Stanley was 3-for-5 with one RBI while Talley finished with two hits and a team-best three runs batted in. Biesecker collected two hits and scored three runs while LaPrade and Grabeel added two hits and two RBIs apiece.

The Eagles return to action Saturday when they travel to Ferrum for a conference doubleheader.
