Eagles Baseball Splits With DeSales

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College  baseball team picked up its first win of the season Sunday when it split a doubleheader with DeSales University.

Chad Lenz provided the Eagles with a strong start in the opener and Brett Jones powered the offense in a 10-5 victory. In the second game, DeSales erased a 4-1 deficit with five runs in the fourth, padded its lead to 11-4 with five more in the fifth and broke the game open with another five-spot in the seventh to defeat the Eagles 21-8.

Lenz pitched five innings in the opener and allowed just one unearned run on two hits while Jones was 4-for-5 at the plate with a two-run homer and four runs batted in.

Bridgewater took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Jacob Grabeel led off with a single and moved to third on a two-out single by Jones. Grabeel scored on a single by Luke Paczewski to put the Eagles on the board. Jones scored when a Cameron Stanley fly ball to right was misplayed for an error, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

After the Bulldogs scored on unearned run in the third, the Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom half of the third when Jacob Talley singled and Jones followed with a two-run homer to right-center making the score 4-1.

Bridgewater added a single run in the fifth. Talley singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored in a double by Jones to put the Eagles ahead 5-1.

After DeSales added a run in the top of the seventh, the Eagles blew the game open with five runs in the bottom half of the seventh. Brett Lysohir was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Talley. Jones and Paczewski each provided a run-scoring single, making the score 7-2. After a pitching change, Stanley and Ryan Skadra each delivered a run-scoring single to make it 9-2. Kevin Navedo drove in the final run of the frame with a sacrifice fly, making the score 10-2.

Bridgewater jumped out to an early lead in the second game. 

The Eagles took the lead in their first at-bat. Grabeel led off the bottom of the first with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Grabeel scored on a single by Talley for a 1-0 Eagles lead.

Two more runs in the second made it 3-0. Stanley reached on an error to start the inning and Navedo followed with a two-run homer to left.

Each team scored a run in the third. The Eagles' Jarrett Biesecker led off the third with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Talley was then safe on a throwing error with Biesecker taking third on the play. Jones plated Biesecker with a sacrifice fly to put the Eagles up 4-1.

The Bulldogs grabbed the lead, 6-4, with a five-run fourth and then padded the margin with five more runs in the fifth. The big blow in the fifth was a grand-slam homer by Johnny Medina.

DeSales tacked on two more runs in the sixth before adding another five-run outburst in the seventh to lead, 18-4. Nick White's three-run homer highlighted the Bulldogs' seventh.

Garrison Wright doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh for the Eagles and scored on a two-out single by Talley to put the Eagles back on the board. 

DeSales finished is scoring in the eighth when Michael White belted a three-run dinger, making the score 21-5.  The Eagles tallied twice in the bottom of the eighth with Brandon Floyd driving in a run with a sacrifice fly. Bridgewater scored its final run in the ninth on a double by Hunter Mohr.

The Eagles, now 1-3 on the season, return to action Friday when they host Hilbert College.
