BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater outscored Roanoke College 19-4 in the second quarter Saturday afternoon to take a 10-point halftime lead and the Eagles pulled away in the second half to defeat the Maroons 78-57 in ODAC action in Nininger Hall.

The Eagles made just one bucket in the first 6:30 of action and the Maroons took advantage, racing out to a 14-2 lead. Eagles point guard Madison Baum broke the Eagles dry spell with a three-point play, making the score 14-5, but Ajah Alexander scored inside, increasing the Maroons' lead to 16-5 with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Sydni Carey knocked down a mid-range jumper and Rebecca Harvey hit two free throws to pull the Eagles to within 16-9 with 1:26 left on the clock. Ayanna Scarbourough scored for Roanoke before Harvey converted a three-point play, cutting Roanoke's lead to 18-12.

Victoria Maxwell's layup put the Maroons' lead at 20-12, but Bridgewater's Diamond Huskey connected on a 3-pointer in the closing seconds as the first quarter ended with the Maroons holding a 20-15 lead.

The second quarter was dominated by the Eagles.

The Eagles opened the quarter with a 9-2 run to overtake the Maroons. Allie Coburn hit a 3-pointer for the Eagles to open the quarter before Victoria Maxwell scored inside to give the Maroons a 22-18 lead. A layup by Carey sliced the Roanoke lead to two, 22-20 and two foul shots by Briana Moore pulled the Eagles even. Baum then hit two foul shots to put Bridgewater ahead 24-22 with 6:22 left in the second quarter.

Roanoke tied the score on a jumper by Molly Hassell with 5:44 left in the second quarter, but the Maroons would go scoreless for the rest of the quarter as the Eagles moved ahead 34-24.

A layup by Erika Nettles put the Eagles back on top and a layup by Baum made the score 28-24. After a free throw by Harvey, Moore scored on a layup to put Bridgewater up 31-24. Baum put the finishing touches on the quarter when she hit a 30-footer at the buzzer to send the Eagles to the locker room with a 34-24 halftime lead.

Bridgewater padded its lead with a 7-2 spurt to start the third quarter. Baum and Roanoke's Maxwell traded hoops before Moore tallied from beyond the arc, giving the Eagles a 39-26 lead. Harvey then added a layup, pushing the margin to 41-26 with 7:49 left in the third quarter.

After a driving layup by Maroons guard Whitney Hopson, Moore hit another 3-ball for a 44-28 Eagles lead. Kristina Harrel made 1-of-2 at the line for Roanoke, but Harvey answered with two foul shots for a 46-29 lead.

The lead was 15 points when Baum scored on a layup and Moore knocked down another 3-pointer, giving the Eagles a 20-point lead, 53-33, with three minutes left in the third quarter.

Renee Alquiza worked inside to score for the Maroons, but field goals by Harvey and Claire Mocarski put the Eagles up 57-35 with 1:41 on the clock. The third quarter ended with the Eagles holding a 20-point lead, 59-39.

Moore scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Eagles' efforts. Harvey scored 17 points while Baum added 14 points to go along with eight assists and five rebounds. Coburn also reached double figures with 10 points. Alquiza and Scarborough led the Maroons as each finished with nine points. 

The battle of the boards was almost dead even with the Maroons holding a slim 52-51 advantage. Mocarski pulled down 12 rebounds for the Eagles and Carey added nine boards.

Bridgewater, now 13-8 overall and 7-7 in the ODAC, is back in action Wednesday evening when the Eagles make the short trip to Harrisonburg to meet the Eastern Mennonite Royals.
