Marlins Hold Off Eagles, 6-3

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan slipped past Bridgewater College, 6-3, Saturday in ODAC men's tennis action.

The Marlins held a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. Paul Gladstone and Mike Portera took the first point with an 8-4 victory over Bridgewater's Freddie Roberts and Nathaniel Horner at the No. 2 slot. At No. 1 doubles, Virginia Wesleyan's Mitch Perry and Nick Gunther defeated Joe Dillenbeck and Josh Rodgers, 8-5. The Eagles salvaged a point at No. 3 doubles as Kris Stokes and Emmett Johnson took an 8-5 victory over Anthony Wilson and Andreas Combos.

Gunther added the first singles point for the Marlins with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Johnson at the No. 3 slot. Rodgers pulled the Eagles closer with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Combos at No. 2, but Perry put the Marlins ahead 4-2 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Roberts at No. 4 singles. Dillenbeck kept the Eagles alive as he rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Gladstone at the No. 1 flight, but the Marlins won the final two matches to secure the team victory.

Wilson scored the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Horner at No. 5 singles. Portera closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 over Sonet Gandhi.
