SU Edges BC in Game Where Lead Never Eclipses One

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. – In a game where neither team ever led by more than a goal, the Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team fell 10-9 in overtime at Shenandoah.

Shenandoah took the lead on Devon Weaver's goal with 4:15 remaining, but Daniel Brown assisted Blake Mann to force overtime.

Bridgewater won the faceoff in extra time but a Brandon Schick shot in transition was blocked and picked up by SU's Jason Simpson. After two missed Hornets shots, the hosts won it on Ryan Schott's goal.

Eric Husselbaugh finished with four goals, including two straight in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles an 8-7 lead. Mann had a hat trick and Brown dished out two assists.

Mason Gauntt won 14-of-21 faceoffs and added 10 ground balls. Kevin Metzger recorded 10 saves in the cage.

Husselbaugh tied the game at 2-2 in the first quarter, and then struck man-up in the second period to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.

Shenandoah scored the final two goals of the half to regain the lead, but Justin Calabrese and Mann opened the third quarter scoring to put the Eagles back up by one.

Michael Brooks led the Hornets with three goals and an assist. Goalie Jason Simpson stopped 16 shots while allowing just nine goals.

Bridgewater (8-7, 2-6 ODAC) falls behind Shenandoah (7-8, 3-5) and into eighth place in the conference, but the Eagles' playoff hopes are still very much alive if they can beat Randolph next Saturday night.

BC will need to watch results around the league, especially Guilford- the Eagles would currently have the best head-to-head goal differential (+4) in a three-way tie with Guilford and Shenandoah, but a Guilford win in one of their final two games vs. Washington & Lee or Randolph-Macon would eliminate the Eagles. A Shenandoah victory at Lynchburg on Wednesday night would do the same.
