Marlins Take Two From Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER - Virginia Wesleyan remained unbeaten in conference play as the Marlins took both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against Bridgewater, winning both games by the same 11-1 score.

The Marlins improved to 16-7 overall and 8-0 in the ODAC while the Eagles dropped to 13-10-1, 3-7 in conference play.

Virginia Wesleyan took the lead in the opener in the top of the second when Corey King cleared the bases with a two-out double, giving the visitors a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning. Kevin Navedo led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Navedo scored on a double by Jacob Grabeel to pull the Eagles to within 3-1.

The Marlins padded the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead and they pulled away during the latter innings to post the 11-1 victory.

Virginia Wesleyan starter Jacob Pilarski worked seven innings on the mound to improve to 6-0 on the season. Pilarski allowed the one unearned run on four hits. He struck out four batters and walked three.

In the second game, Bridgewater starter Jacob Benfield and Marlins' starter Chance Pauley matched zeroes through the first four innings before the visitors took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. A pair of walks set the table for Brandon Kussmaul and the Marlins shortstop belted a two-out, three-run homer to left-center field to put the visitors on top 3-0.

The Marlins took advantage of three Bridgewater errors in the seventh to increase the lead to 5-0 before the Eagles got a run back in the bottom half of the seventh. Jacob Talley lined a single off the pitcher to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Talley scored on Austin Batten's single to center, cutting the Marlins' lead to 5-1.

Bridgewater's fielding woes continued in the eighth when four more errors led to six runs as the Marlins finished off the doubleheader sweep.

The Eagles return to action Monday afternoon when they host Ferrum College for a non-conference doubleheader with the first game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
