Men's Lax Grabs Crucial ODAC Victory

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team scored five unanswered goals on either side of halftime to beat Guilford 14-9 on Saturday.

Bridgewater surged ahead with two tallies in the opening 34 seconds of the second half to complete the five-goal run and go up 9-4.

Mason Gauntt scored right off the faceoff win 12 seconds into the third. After a scramble for the next ground ball, Justin Calabrese emerged and went the length of the field to strike again for Bridgewater.

Gauntt won 14-of-22 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls. Benjamin Vayer led the defense with three caused turnovers.

Freshman Eric Husselbaugh led the attack with six points on four goals and two assists. Blake Mann (three goals, two assists) and Calabrese (two goals, three assists) each added five points.

After Calabrese was saved on the game's first opportunity, Mann picked up on the ground ball on the edge of the crease and scored.

Mann would then make it 3-1 in the sixth minute of play on a crease roll from behind the cage, after the Eagles had put three shots wide on the same possession.

Vincent Foti helped the Eagles take a 4-1 lead with 4:38 left in the first. He picked up a ground ball, shrugged off a hard check on the clear and found Mann 2-on-1, who fed Husselbaugh for the score.

The teams each had a power play opportunity late in the first quarter- BC couldn't convert on a two-minute non-releasable chance, and Guilford scored on a 30-second man-up to make it 4-2 Eagles after one period.

Aswan Bland's outside shot completed a 3-0 Guilford run following an extended injury timeout, tying the game at 4-4. The Eagles finally found their groove again and scored twice in 78 seconds, capped by a Foti drive to make it 6-4 Bridgewater. Mann struck on the power play to give BC a 7-4 halftime lead.

Both goalies had strong days, as Kevin Metzger saved 13 shots in the victory and Guilford's Parker Styles also stopped 13 attempts.

Guilford (who totaled 14:30 penalty minutes on 16 flags) committed three different penalties at the close of the third quarter and the Eagles cashed in at the beginning of the fourth. Daniel Brown scored man-up to make it 11-7, the second straight BC goal after the Quakers had gotten back to within two in the third quarter.

Bridgewater is 7-3, 2-2 after a crucial ODAC victory. Guilford falls to 8-3, 2-1.
