Box Score BRIDGEWATER - Bridgewater College erased a 15-point, second-half deficit to take the lead with just under six minutes left to play, but the Eagles were unable to maintain the advantage down the stretch Saturday afternoon and fell 67-59 to Roanoke College.
The Eagles shots just 32 percent from the floor in the first half and trailed by 11 points, 35-24, at the break.
The Maroons kept the lead in double figures for the first seven minutes of the second half and took their biggest lead of the game, 45-30, when Eli Sumpter converted a layup in traffic with 12:56 remaining in the contest.
Bridgewater then responded with an 8-0 spurt to pull within seven. Ken Stanciel and Dimetri Chambers hit 3-pointers to trim the margin back to single digits, 45-36. Josh Cammon added an inside hoop to whittle the Roanoke lead down to seven, 45-38, with 11:55 left to play.
After a bucket by Roanoke's Jorden Davis, TJ Turner connected from long range and Cammon knocked down a 12-footer to pull the Eagles to within four, 47-43, with 10:13 left.
Another 3-pointer by Turner made it a one-point game, 47-46, at the 9:38 mark, but the Maroons held the Eagles off until a driving layup by Chambers put the Eagles on top 52-51 with 5:41 left on the clock. Bridgewater then stretched its lead to four when Chandler Murray was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer and the Eagles' guard made all three free throws to make it 55-51 with five minutes left
A three-point play by Josh Freund sliced the Eagles lead to one and a layup by Sumpter move the Maroons back on top, 56-55, with 3:37 remaining. A layup by Chambers swung the lead back to the Eagles and then Chambers converted two foul shots after coming away with a steal, giving Bridgewater a 59-56, edge at the 2:29 mark.
Those turned out the be the final points of the game for the Eagles as the Maroons closed the contest with a 12-0 run to take the victory.
Freund hit the first of a two-shot foul to pull the Maroons to within two, but the Maroons' big man missed the second. Joe Mikalauskas pulled down the offensive rebound following Freund's miss, giving Roanoke another possession. Freund went to work again inside, drawing another foul, and this time he hit both foul shots to tie the score at 59-59 with 2:06 left.
The Eagles were unable to convert on its next possession and C.J. Miles hit a long 3-pointer to put the visitors ahead 62-59 with 1:32 on the clock. Chambers missed a potential tying 3-pointer from the corner on the Eagles' next trip and Miles then added two foul shots to make it 64-59 with just 50 seconds remaining. Freund added four foul shots down the stretch to push the final margin to 68-59.
Chambers led the Eagles with 12 points while Murray and Cammon each added 10. Freund poured in 23 points to pace the Maroons.
Bridgewater made just 20-of-62 shots (32.3 percent), including just 10-of-34 from 3-point range. Freund pulled down 19 rebounds to lead the Maroons to a 43-39 edge on the boards. Stanciel and Sami El-Rafey grabbed eight boards apiece for the Eagles.
Bridgewater, now10-7 overall and 4-4 in the ODAC returns to action Wednesday evening when the Eagles travel to Winchester, Va., to play Shenandoah University.
