GREENSBORO, N.C. - Bridgewater College picked up a big road victory Saturday afternoon as the Eagles edged Guilford College, 67-66, in ODAC men's basketball action played at the Ragan-Brown Field House.
The Eagles picked up the victory despite playing most of the game without its leading scorer, AJ Horde. Horde left the game early with an injury after playing just five minutes and did not return.
Bridgewater (9-6, 3-3 in the ODAC) took a 9-8 lead on a layup by Dimetri Chambers, but Guilford scored the next seven points to lead 15-9, with 12:23 left in the first half. The Qaukers stretched their lead to eight, 24-16, when Trever Hyatt knocked down a 3-pointer at the 9:35 mark.
A 3-pointer by Chambers pulled the Eagles to with 26-22 before buckets by Marcus Curry and Alston Thompson pushed the Quakers' advantage back to eight points, 30-22, with 6:23 left in the half.
Bridgewater still trailed by eight, 34-26, when Alston worked inside for another bucket at the 4:42 mark. The Eagles then outscored Guilford 12-4 during the remainder of the half to pull even at the break. Bridgewater's Zach Breathwaite and Guilford's Carson Long traded buckets before a 3-pointer by TJ Turner inched the Eagles to within five, 36-31. Long scored again to make it 38-31 with 3:25 on the clock, but those turned out to be the final points for the Quakers in the first half. Chambers hit another 3-pointer and layup by Sami El-Rafey pulled the Eagles to within two, 38-36, with 1:30 remaining. El-Rafey scored again with 44 seconds left to knot the score at the half, 38-38.
Guilford (7-8, 3-3 in the ODAC) scored first in the second half and the Quakers held the lead until Davrion Grier scored inside to tie the game at 55-55 with 6:19 left to play. Guilford responded with a 3-pointer by Long and a three-point play by Joah Logan to take a six-point lead, 61-55, at the 4:38 mark.
Then it was Bridgewater's turn to answer and the Eagles reeled off 10 straight points to go ahead. El Rafey scored inside and Ken Stanciel hit a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game, 61-60, with 3:59 left. After Long missed a 3-pointer for the Quakers, Stanciel was fouled at the offensive end and the freshman forward made both foul shots, giving the Eagles their first lead of the second half, 62-61, with 2:40 left in the game.
Bridgewater's Mark James came up with a big steal on Guilford's next possession and Stanciel took a pass from Chambers and drained another 3-pointer, giving the Eagles a 65-61 lead with 2:07 left.
Curry pulled the Quakers closer with two free throws, but Chambers scored on a driving layup, giving the Eagles a 67-63 advantage with 1:27 on the clock. Curry missed a jumper, but Logan grabbed the offensive rebound to keep possession with Guilford and Long hit a long 3-pointer to trim the Eagles' lead to a single point, 67-66, with 1:03 left.
Long's 3-pointer turned out to be the final basket of the game. The Eagles worked the shot clock down on their next possession, but Chambers missed his shot and Curry controlled the rebound for the Quakers with 35 seconds left in the game.
Curry missed inside for the Quakers, but Logan grabbed another key offensive board. Guilford, however, failed to take advantge of the second-chance opportunity and turned the ball over with less than 10 seconds remaining. The Eagles then committed a turnover but Grier blocked an inside shot by Thompson and the ball went out of bounds to the Eagles with five seconds left. The Quakers fouled Stanciel and he missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Quakers one final chance. Following a timeout, Long's off-balance shot at the buzzer was off the mark as the Eagles escaped with the 67-66 victory.
Chambers hit 7-of-14 shots, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, to lead the Eagles with 17 points. Grier finished with 11 points and Stanciel came off the bench to score 10. Stanciel's effort paced a strong performance by the Eagles' reserves as they outscored Guilford 28-17. Turner scored eight off the bench and El-Rafey added six.
Guilford owned a 35-26 edge on the boards, but the Eagles forced 15 turnovers while turning the ball over just 11 times. Chambers and Josh Cammon each pulled down five rebounds for the Eagles while Logan led the Quakers with eight boards.
Bridgewater made exactly half of its 50 shots while the Quakers connected on 44.2 percent (23-of-52). The Eagles held the advantage from beyond the arc, making 10-of-21 3-pointers while the Quakers hit 7-of-21 from long range.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday evening at Nininger Hall when they host Virginia Wesleyan. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
