Lynchburg Answers BC's Second Half Rally

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. –
The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team rallied to tie at one point in the second half, but Lynchburg responded with three unanswered goals to take the ODAC quarterfinal matchup 9-7 on Wednesday.

Sophomore Kristen Stark had a second half hat trick for the Eagles, with classmate Sarah Yashinskie adding two goals and an assist. Junior Kayla O'Sullivan led the defense with three caused turnovers, three ground balls and three draw controls.

Trailing 6-2 at halftime, Bridgewater ran off four straight. Stark scored twice, and then Lynchburg goalie Chelsea Shultis could only get a piece of Claire Palermo-Re's free position shot.

With under 15 minutes to play, Yashinskie forced a turnover and went in all alone, but Shultis made a point blank save. Stark was fouled in the ensuing scramble and scored on the restart to tie it up.

Alicia Sandoval answered just 48 seconds later however, starting a decisive three-goal run for the Hornets. Sandoval would cap it with another goal, bobbling the ball for a second but getting to it first and then cutting past a defender to score.

Shultis made another good save on Annie Sullivan with 5:25 to go, and Bridgewater couldn't mount another comeback despite getting one back when Shannon Rogers found fellow rookie Dwyer Neal on a quick counterattack.

Lynchburg ran off four unanswered goals in the final four minutes of the first half to break open a 2-2 tie.

Early on, both Anna O'Hara and Yashinskie were denied by Shultis. Lynchburg opened the scoring with 17:27 left in the first half, and Yashinskie tied it up twice at 1-1 and 2-2 in the opening period.

The Eagles finish their season at 10-7 following a second straight two-goal defeat at Lynchburg in the ODAC opening round. The Hornets advance to face #2 Washington & Lee in Saturday's semifinals.
