Defending Champs Pull Away in Fourth Quarter

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team hung with defending ODAC champion Washington & Lee for three quarters, ultimately falling on the road 17-9.

A pair of Bridgewater pushing penalties less than a minute apart allowed W&L's Joe Perrella to score two man-up goals in 36 seconds and push the Generals lead to 12-3 in the third quarter.

The Eagles would respond with four straight however, to head into the fourth quarter trailing just 12-7.

Sean MacLeish scored man-up, followed quickly by Blake Mann and Chris Voorhees goals to make it three in 78 seconds. Mann ended the third quarter scoring with another power play tally.

The Eagles would cut it to five again in the fourth quarter, 14-9, after goals by Voorhees and Mann, before the Generals scored the final three of the contest.

Voorhees finished with four goals while Mann had a hat trick. Nick Strider led the Eagles with six ground balls and was competitive on faceoffs, winning 9-of-21.

Bridgewater struck first through Hunter Callan's man-up goal, and did not trail for the opening 11 minutes of the first quarter.

Washington & Lee opened up a 10-3 halftime lead by going on quick 4-0 runs in each of the first two quarters.

Sam Dardani tied the contest at 1-1 and the Generals followed with three goals in a span of under three minutes to go ahead 4-1.

In the second quarter, the Generals scored nine seconds apart before adding two more within a span of 1:44 for a 9-2 lead.

Four Generals recorded hat tricks, with A.J. Witherell adding five assists for eight total points. Jack Hodgson won 18-of-24 faceoffs and picked up 11 ground balls.

Bridgewater is 5-6, 1-3 ODAC heading into a Saturday game at Guilford that will be crucial for the Eagles' playoff hopes. Washington & Lee remains in first place at 7-4, 5-0.
