Eagles Drop Doubleheader At Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Guilford College rallied for a walk-off, 8-7 victory in Saturday's opener and then won the second game 10-4 to sweep an ODAC doubleheader from Bridgewater College.

In the first game, the Eagles scored two runs in the first and two more in the second to lead 4-1.

With one out in the first, Austin Batten walked and moved to third on Chris King's single to right. Batten scored on a groundout to short by Brett Jones to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. After Jake Bailey walked, Jacob Talley singled up the middle, scoring King for a 2-0 Bridgewater lead.

The Quakers scored one run in the bottom of the first before the Eagles added two more runs in the top of the second.

The Eagles loaded the bases with three consecutive singles by JT Creed, Matthew LaPrade and Brandon Poole to start the second inning. With two outs and the bases still full, Jones drove in two runs with a single to left, making the score 4-1.

The lead didn't last long as Guilford responded with five runs in the bottom of the second. Rocco Wilcox and Mitchel Stumpo each delivered two-run singles for the Quakers.

Bridgewater tied the score with two runs in the top of the fourth. Batten got the inning started with a one-out single.and King walked. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Jones singled to right, scoring both runners to knot the score at 6-6.

The Eagles took the lead in the seventh. LaPrade walked to lead off the frame and Brandon Poole reached on an infield single. Batten then put down a sacrifice bunt and was safe at first on a throwing error to load the bases with no outs. The Quakers worked out of the jam by allowing just one run. Jones plated the run on a sacrifice fly to put the Eagles ahead 7-6.

Guilford pulled even with a run in the eighth to set up the winning score in the ninth.

Stumpo tied the score in the eighth with a two-out, single to center, scoring Chris Finney from second to make the score 7-7.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth Logan Washle reached base on a walk for the Quakers. Joe Metts singled and Stewart Laws walked to load the bases. Finney then singled up the middle to drive home the winning run, finishing off the Quakers 8-7 victory.

The Eagles came out just short in the opener despite finishing the game with 17 hits. Jones had a big game, going 2-for-5 with six RBIs and Talley extended his hitting streak to 18 straight games with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate. Poole, King, Luke Paczewski, Creed and LaPrade added two hits each.

Bridgewater opened the second game with a run in the top of the first, but the Quakers scored six times in the bottom half of the inning and Eagles were unable to overcome the early deficit.

Batten doubled with one out in the first and scored on a single by Jones, making the score 1-0.

The Quakers answered in the bottom of the first with six runs to take the lead for good. Finney capped the inning with a three-run double to make the score 6-1.

RBI-singles by LaPrade and King in the top of the second inning pulled the Eagles to within 6-3, but the Quakers got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the second to lead 7-3.

Bridgewater threatened in the sixth inning when the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs. Parker Mead led off with a pinch-hit single and Cameron Stanley and LaPrade followed with infield hits to load the sacks. A sacrifice fly by Poole scored Mead to make the score 7-4 and a single by Batten re-loaded the bases, still with just one out. The Quakers avoided further damage when King lined out to third and Jones popped out as the inning ended with Guilford leading 7-4.

The Quakers tacked on two runs in the bottom of the seventh to lead 9-4 and Guilford shut out the Eagles over the final three innings to close out the 10-4 win.

Batten and LaPrade each had two base hits in the second game to lead the Eagles' 11-hit effort. Talley went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 19 games.

Saturday's losses put an end to the Eagles' playoff chances. Bridgewater (13-23, 6-13 in the ODAC) will play their final home game Monday afternoon when the Eagles host Eastern Mennonite.
