Eagles Can't Maintain Fast Start Against #16 Roanoke College

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -
Bridgewater College couldn't keep the momentum from their fast start in the first period as they lost 17-10 to #16 Roanoke College in an ODAC contest Wednesday. The loss drops Bridgewater's record to 6-8 on the year.

Sean MacLeish lead the Eagles in scoring as he tallied a hat trick and one assist. Chris Voorhees and Blake Mann (who reached 100 career goals) each contributed with two goals of their own. Michael Fairley got the nod in the cage for Bridgewater and finished with 22 saves.

Turnovers were a major difference in the game as Bridgewater turned the ball over 37 times compared to Roanoke's 17. The Maroons had a big day from their offense as they had two players score hat tricks and had four players tally two goals each in the contest.

The Eagles got off to a fast start in the contest as they held a 4-2 advantage after one period of play. MacLeish put Bridgewater on the board first with his first of two man-up goals in the period. Voorhees added goal number 32 on the season with 3:16 remaining in the first off one of Daniel Brown's three assists in the game.

While being stunned with the quick start, the Maroons quickly regained their focus and settled in during the second period. The Eagles extended their lead to 6-4 midway through the period after MacLeish assisted Mann on the goal. The Maroons then rattled off five straight goals in the period to take a 9-6 lead into the half.

Roanoke extended their lead to 10-6 by scoring their sixth straight goal off another Bridgewater turnover. The Eagles got to within three of Roanoke's lead with 7:32 remaining in the third when Hunter Callan found the back of the cage off the Brown's assist. That was the closest they would get the rest of the way.

Entering the fourth period trailing 13-8, MacLeish found the back of the net just 49 seconds into the fourth off an assist from Steven Cosgrove. Turnovers continued to plague Bridgewater as Roanoke scored three more goals off Eagle giveaways however.

Nick Strider was excellent on faceoffs for the Eagles, winning 17-of-25 and adding five ground balls. Jake Truman picked up seven ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Bridgewater held its annual HEADstrong Foundation cancer awareness game, raising money for the organization to help those with cancer find an improved quality of life.

The Eagles return to action when they face Hampden-Sydney in an ODAC matchup on Saturday April 22. The game is set to begin at 5:00 p.m.
