Bridgewater Can't Complete Comeback Against UMW

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College nearly completed its comeback after falling behind early in Thursday's non-conference matchup with Mary Washington. Mary Washington held on to win 9-8 as the loss drops the Eagles to 11-20 on the season.

Chris King and Jacob Talley led Bridgewater at the plate, both went 3-4 and batted in one apiece. Sophomore right fielder Brett Jones went 2-5 with a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. Left Fielder Matthew LaPrade added two RBIs of his own while going 2-4 at the plate.

The Eagles made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, after entering the last frame down 9-3. Jones got the Eagles two-out rally started with a three-run home run to right, after he had another potential home run taken from him earlier.

Jake Bailey followed Jones's home run by doubling down the right field line. After advancing to third on a JT Creed single, Bailey scored following shortstop Jacob Talley's RBI single, bringing the Eagles to within two.

LaPrade added his second RBI of the day with a bases loaded walk which drew the Eagles to within one. UMW pitcher Hank Biggs would retire the following batter Austin Batten by getting him to fly out to center, bringing the Bridgewater two-out comeback to an end.

Mary Washington seized the lead in the second with back to back two-run singles. Cody Beacorn added the first single, while the following batter Robert Cross plated the final two runs for the Eagles giving them a 4-0 advantage they would never relinquish.

UMW expanded their lead to 7-0 before Bridgewater struck back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. All three runs would be scored on RBI singles, with hits coming from Matthew LaPrade, Parker Mead, and King.

Jones nearly brought the Eagles to within two in the bottom of the seventh with a deep fly ball to right before being robbed with a spectacular grab by UMW's Brian Burns, as the ball was just passing over the wall.

In the ninth, Mary Washington added two runs to their total with a Thomas Weaver solo home run to left and a Truslow RBI single to left, giving UMW a 9-3 advantage heading into the last frame.

Bridgewater is back in action tomorrow on Good Friday when they host Emory & Henry in an ODAC doubleheader. It is both Senior Day and Family Day tomorrow at the ballpark. First pitch is set for noon.
